Xbox, Gamecube or PS2. Which for you?

Not to mention, Tony Hawk 3 came out for PS2 last week

I can’t stop playing this game.

In order to get that crowd on the XBox bandwagon, they released “Tony Hawk 2x,” which is nothing but a combination of the first two releases.

Boo for school on that one.

Hugs his PS2

For reasons that I have already stated. (Bottom of the page)

Jeez, Handy, you’re acting like it’s the friggin’ Titanic. Is it so hard to find criticisms for the thing that you need to reach so much? “I don’t like it, it’s five inches too big.”

Everyone was assuming that the PS2’s price would drop slightly when the X-Box was released… but this doesn’t seem to be the case. My friend (who’s been eying the PS2 for months) asked a sales manager at Best Buy about possible price drops, and the answer was that Sony has no plans to lower the price any time soon.

Ah, well… you can always wait for the PS3 (already been announced by Sony).

**

This is a lie salespeople in electronics stores are taught to tell customers to get them to buy the videogame platforms at their currently overinflated prices now.

I was eyeing up some PS2’s at Electronics Boutique and the $5.00 an hour salesman tried high pressuring me to buy one, I said I was going to wait for the price to drop.

He really started hammering me, loudly, so that everyone in earshot could see what an idiot I was, saying there was no way that was going to ever happen, I may as well get it over with right now, and pay $300.

I said, buddy, tell me something, since you are the expert here: what do all of these game consoles have in common?

Sega Dreamcast
Nintendo 64
Playstation
Sega Genesis
Super NES
3DO
Sega Saturn

THEY ALL WENT FOR HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS WHEN THEY WERE FIRST INTRODUCED, THEN EVENTUALLY SOLD FOR LESS THAN $100, YOU STUPID MORON!!!

Nothing like dressing down some guy trying to play Glengarry Glenn Ross in a mall . . .

Okay, I wasn’t that mean, but the point is history shows all game console prices eventually get slashed. I don’t care if it has a DVD player or not since DVD prices are going down, PS2 will eventually be available for under $200 by the end of 2002, mark my words.

As for Sony supposedly losing money on each console they sell, I find that questionable, I can’t see how a company like Sony would make millions of an item and not turn a profit.

I somehow doubt the business people who built a multi-billion corporation did it my making procuct after product that loses money.

If this is true, they are making money in another way, like gaming licensing, or are absorbing up-front marketing costs with the long term strategy of going into the black. The “Sony is losing money on every PS2 they sell” sounds like a statement perpetrated out there that does not quite tell the whole story . . .

"“I don’t like it, it’s five inches too big.”

So? I think the Japanese are space-tight with small apartments so they make systems that are small/or can be stood upright (PS2). Americans have bigger homes so systems like the Xbox can be bigger. Do you think that idea holds water?

This is indeed very, very true- especially at Best Buy, SPOOFE.

Personally, I haven’t heard anything about PS2 price drops- then again, I haven’t asked. If I hear anything, though, I’ll let you know.

That’s because Jack Tramiel (then-CEO of Atari) was too much of a cheapskate to give it a faster processor and more memory (and real development tools, and a real advertising budget, and real third-party support). The underlying technology was sound, but the corporate execution sucked.

But at least we Jaguar owners were playing Alien vs. Predator years before the rest of y’all…

rjung-

No need to defend the Jag. I own 5 – 4 Brand new in boxes never opened, 1 that I use, and 2 new CD players for it. And you’re right, AvP was a good game.

But you even said it yourself, they cheaped out on a processor (68000 wasn’t it?) and low RAM (which by itself isn’t much of a problem for a cartridge based machine). At the time when it came out, it was OK for a couple of months, but even by the time the Saturn came out it was in comparison “junk” and couldn’t compete.

Junk is also a relative term and maybe not the best to use… how about “underpowered”?

And it’s gonna be the PS2.

Ironically, although the release of Metal Gear Solid 2
gave me a strong push, I think MGS2 may not live up to the hype. No, what really did it was this…

That’s right - Soul Caliber 2, baby! I am a total Soul Caliber freak. I love this game more than any other fighting game I’ve ever played. It has just the right features - weapons, which I like better than hand-to-hand, cool costumes, neat backgrounds, a not too terribly deep play system so I don’t get whomped on by people with no lives who play way too much, (I think twitch and luck are important elements to make a fighting game fun) and enough cheesecake to keep me interested but not so much that it takes away from the rest of the game.

Also, the excellent reviews of Devil May Dry and Grand Theft Auto 3 helped. Of course I’m drooling over Gran Turismo 3 as well, but that’s been true for a long time.
Plus I’ve been looking forward to playing Guilty Gear X as well.

Now, Dead or Alive 3 does look absolutely spectacular. And Halo looks like a lot of fun too. But those are the only two titles for the XBox that I have any interest in at all. I know it’s early to judge it on the games, since the PS2 totally sucked dog wang in terms of games at the release too. But right now, PS2 just has a whole buncha games I really want. And while I’ll miss DOA3 (Halo I can probably skip without missing too much - Half-Life is coming to the PS2), Soul Caliber 2 and DOA2 will go a long way towards sating my fighting urges.

So for right now, PS2. If I get more money later on, I’ll probably pick up an X_Box. Probably used. But for the moment, it’s gonna be PS2.

Computer games for me

Don’t tell me your the same llamasex from SA

Xbox doesn’t look so big now that I saw it. Here is a nice site with pictures of the inside of it:

Well, I don’t know about you, but PS2 has been around. On my floor here there are a bunch. They’re alright. But I prefer Nintendos creativity and design. I’ll go with teh gamecube thankyouverymuch. And microsoft sucks, I hope they don’t get too far into this before everyone craps on their face.

According to CNet, go with either the Xbox, or if you wanna save money, buy Gamecube.

Since I work at Best Buy, and the Xbox and PS2 are just right across the path from our department. I get to compare all sorts of different second-generation PS2 games against the first-generation Xbox games, and the majority of the Xbox games have superior graphics and sound. Dunno about the stories/plot/gameplay/etc., but from what customers say, the games are intensive.

rjung - In every store I’ve been to, whenever I asked if they had a PS2 with a reliable modchip, the response was always “no” or “we’re still waiting on that”. I’ll try again this weekend. Again, our entire family wants this thing, for various reasons (including backwards compatibility), but we gotta have a whole system. No exceptions.

Oh, one more thing…don’t you EVER dis Pump It Up, y’hear?

everyone - If the X-Box has games that are easy to pick up and not spine-breakingly hard (bear in mind that I find games like Defender of the Crown and Mortal Kombat spine-breakingly hard), it may be worth a look. But the PS2 is starting to look good, our budget for such frivolities is limited, and the X-Box’s problems loom large large. (Okay, we’ll probably be able to avoid overheating and crashes, but c’mon, who wants that Sword of Damocles?) We also don’t care about one-system exclusives, and refuse out of principle to support this disgusting strategy.

And of course, there are a number of other issues: Rentability (If Blockbuster Video didn’t carry Dreamcast games, I’d never have bought one. It’s that simple.), variety of games, availability, support, new development, and the overall health of the company. All carefully taken into consideration.

So it looks like we’re getting a PS2, and if the modchip really is there, pretty soon.

I know two things:

  1. When it was first released, Sony was losing around $100 on each unit sold.

  2. They haven’t managed to cut costs that much in the year it’s been out.

Ergo, it makes it seem very likely that Sony will be unwilling to cut the price. The official word my friend got was that “Sony believes the PS2 will remain competitive at its current price”, or somesuch. Which also isn’t that hard to believe… they’ve got the brand name advantage, the game advantage, and the “old reliable” reputation advantage.

But, yes, I do agree that the PS2 will drop significantly in price by 2002.

They make the money back in game sales. That’s why just about EVERY game - no matter how crappy - is released at a price of $50.

I’ts always been a practice since the original nintendo came out to lose money on a game system so you can make it up in liscencing fees

At the last time I read that the average cut of the game system for such liscence was 15.00 or equal to that So yes the price of a ps2 wil drop when it makes enough on the fees to warrant it

another rule is at first with any new system that had a predcessor youre going to see repackaged versions of old games usually with just better graphics
for the first year or 2 the system is out this really happened when the snes came out

the computer industry did this when vga first came out i.e. “kings quest 3 vga edition”

although this dosent really happen when a system has back ward compataibily

Just a couple points…
Soul Caliber 2 is coming out for all three systems, and will probably look better on the Xbox than either of the other two, considering it’s capabilities. I was going to buy DOA3 till I heard that was coming out.

If your a GT3 fan, check out Project Gotham Racing. I think you’ll be even more impressed. I rented it yesterday from Blockbuster, and it’s freaking amazing. Unlike GT3’s 2D cardboard cutout backgrounds, the envirorments in PGR are totally 3D and the cars can receive realistic impact damage. Not to mention the soundtrack is phenomenal, and totally adjustable. During the game, depending on where you are, (say, Japan) you have the choice of either playing on of threesimulated radio stations from that country, including DJ banter, a non dj mix of general music, or you can burn tracks off your own personal CDs and have those play in the game as well. I am not a racing game fan at all, yet this game’s got me glued to the set.

Jeez, Seriousart, if you want to talk about games, all you have to do is tell them about Project Ego.

I too will go with the X-Box - I like Microsoft, was never a fan of the Playstation, and am pretty much sick of Nintendo. Another factor is that I prefer computer games (though I do own a Turbographix 16, a Genesis with a 32X, and a Nintendo 64). Oh, and I want to play Halo.
