Yay! It only took 2½ years (new fora descriptions)

So, I’m fanwanking myself. Get over it.
In November of '05 I suggested moving genereal discussion about moderating to ATMB.
It only got six replies but still…
I’m very happy about the change.

Drat!

Someone supports the change; now we have to switch it back.

Hey, that’s nothing. I once suggested a new forum for quizzes and puzzles, which got a whole 2 replies. Three and a half years later, they opened the Games Room.

The mills of the Mods grind slowly, but exceedingly fine.

I oppose the addition of new subforums. Change is something done by message boards that capitalize on fads and cater to the proletarian masses, not the intellectual crowd that call the SDMB home. The addition of the gaming subforum will likely cause the posting quality across the SDMB to drop. It clutters my list of message boards. It will attract a bad element to the board, such as teenagers and the immature MMORPG gamer crowd. Also, all the database queries for the new subforum will affect performace throughout the board. All the timeouts we’re having recently is probably due to the new subforum. Sure, some might say “don’t read it”, but I’ll know it’s there, and I don’t want others participating.

I’m not a big fan of that Cafe Society subforum either. Change is bad, especially on the SDMB.

 elmwood, turn  that  frown  upside  down  !

I remember back in the day when we use to get all these debate topics framed as questions in General Questions and I said, “We should have a separate forum for these debates.”

Actually, I think I wrote something more like, “Let’s dump all these stupid endless argument threads into their own black hole forum and then the rest of us can ignore them. We can call it ‘Under The Bridge’ and send all the trolls there.”

Oh yeah? Well I remember back even farther than that, when our bulletin board didn’t have freetext entry, and anytime we wanted to ask a question, we had to choose it from a drop-down list: “Does .999 equal 1” and “if everybody in China jumped at once” and “objects you can see from space” and “why does my tree smell like jizz.” And that was it, and we liked it! But then somebody had to come along and suggest we ought to be able to type in any question we wanted to ask, and the current anarchy is the result.

I fear change.

“It’s 3 am. Do you know where your children are?” – Answer that first. Then you might be able to answer the above.
But seriously. When was this, pre 2001?

Hey, whippersnapper, if your join date don’t end in '99, bugger out.
In fact, if the join date is later than June 1999, bugger out…
Waiting to get slapped with a roadkill for not being part of the AOLers. I couldn’t get an AOL account in Europe back then - I was so envious.

First time I joined as a guest, back in 1987, the General Questions forum consisted of a single screen that said:

It just does, okay?

Those smilies are distracting from the content of this thread! Look at the one-line posts they’re associated with, too. I knew the introduction of smilies would change the character of discourse on the board for the worse. Back in the good old days, GD was filled with threads on topics such as the deconstruction of works by Noam Chomsky and Derrida. Great physicists consulted GQ to seek and share knowledge about quantum physics. Now GD is fluff about Hillary, Obama, and peak oil, and GQ dominated questions about how blind people pick up their seeing eye dog’s excrement. I blame this on smilies: with their addition, the barbarians charged through the gate. God only knows what would happen if vBulletin was upgraded …

Change is bad. Very, very bad.

1987? Noob. Found this old screenshot on an 8" CP/M floppy I had converted to CD-ROM a while back.

So the 99ers arent that high and lofty?

I would have been here sooner: www.eeggs.com linked to snopes.com , snopes.com linked to here. After rounding those sites… I finally ended up over here.

This isn’t Meeko the trumpet player, is it?

(I know someone in Atlanta who is. And if this is you, you’re gonna be SO surprised.)

I never know when you guys are being serious or not.

Trying telling the youngsters nowadays we use to have flame wars that lasted for months over profound philosophical issues like ketchup vs mustard.

This might be the most obnoxious post ever. I tip my hat to you sir! :stuck_out_tongue:

It was never like that. Cervaise was just making a funny.

Just wait! I plan on following it with twenty posts explaining how to turn off smilies and why my other message board has smilies and everyone there is a genius.
