Note to self:
(I hate you. In a good way of course. Have lots of fun, and don’t forget the sunscreen.)
Which island?
Woo! Me too! I leave Tuesday morning and don’t get back until the following Monday. I’m visiting my sister, who’s living out there for the summer with her husband’s job. Can’t wait.
Ummm… The Hamaii island.
Yeah.
That one.
After checking with relatives, I find that it will be Maui that we will be visiting.
Woops, meant to say [i[ Hawaii*.
Stupid slippery fingers.
What good fortune! Maui is the best island, IMO. I’ve been there twice and once to Oahu, and according to those I’ve talked to while there, they liked Maui most as well.
What kind of hotel accomodations are you getting?
MAUI NO KA OI !
Hope you get a chance to take a couple excursions, in addition to some serious beach time while you’re there!
The sunrise bicycle trip down Haleakala is spectacular And the half day trip by catamaran over to Lanai is fun too, love when the dolphins meet the boat! Or driving over to Hana…sigh…
Whatever you do or don’t do Enjoy!!!
Damn, I miss the macadamia banana pancakes with mango/guava syrup.
Yay for you! You are going to have a blast. I’m eagerly looking forward to my trip to Maui this August, and I’m jealous you are going sooner!
I recommending getting this. Doughty does a darned good job, although the book is popular enough that his ‘hidden gems’ are no longer hidden.
Definitely do sunrise on Haleakala if you get the chance. Bring warm clothing, it gets damned cold up there (and sea level to 10,000 feet is quite shock to the system). I hear the bike ride is cool, never done it myself.
Go to Hana if you get the chance and have time. Leave early before all the grammas get on the Hana highway; leave lots of time to dawdle over sights along the way. House rentals can be had, stay overnight if possible. Don’t believe what they say about the Kaupo road, it’s fairly passable if you take your time. (As you’re passing through Kipahulu on the way to Seven Pools (O’heo Gulch), you’ll pass a sign that reads “Caution, Baby Pigs Crossing”, which is in front of the house I used to stay at with some friends until they sold it a few years ago. I sure miss that place.) If you get to Seven Pools, do the hike to at least the first waterfall, it’s quite nice and not hard to reach; the second waterfall is a tough hike, but impressive as hell.
Snorkel. The snorkling is about 5x better on Kaui, IMO, but good spots can be found on Maui. I’ve had good luck at some of the spots near or past the end of the Wailea/Makena road on the south end. Lots of cool lava flows around there as well if you venture a little further. Get gear at a rental place like Snorkel Bob’s. Or take a boat tour to Molokini.
Stop at Mama’s Fish House for lunch then go to nearby Hookipa beach, windsurfing capital of the world and see waves as big as an apartment building on a good day.
Jeez, I could go on all day. Get Doughty’s book. Have fun!
Yeah, people don’t really go to hawaii, they go to Maui or the main island, etc…
I went to Maui twice trying to find some of that big blue surf I see in surfing magazines. But didn’t find any. It was pushed down by the tradewinds… or just tiny…maui looked from the plane as if it were 80% dry land with nothing on it …anyway, its hot there about 85 all the time so get a car with air conditioning & have fun. I went to a Luau that costs $80 for nonresidents & 60 for residents. tsk
Wow, I’ve never not seen intimidating surf in Paia (been there 6 times). Wierd.
Lucky I want to be there…
Paia is usually blown out, but Baby’s has some nice sets at times… that used to be my brother’s spot…
On Maui gotta do the Haleakala Sunrise and Molokini!! I’ve lived there my whole life and never done either, sad sad sad… but not to say one day I won’t!!
If you’re looking for decently priced plate lunches, Da Kitchen is where you want to go!! There’s one right down from the airport in Kahului and one in Kihei…

2-3 ft - knee to waist high and good conditions.
See, as I said, no surf
Why aren’t I going to Hawaii?
You’d better have fun, as I’ll be living vicariously through you.
Hmmm, or perhaps you have a unique psychic skill that can calm surf at a glance. Have you considered joining the X-Men?
Take care of my home, 'kay?
Now you sing it, lady!
Don’t forget to take a whale watching tour!
Also pick up some pineapple or passion fruit wine from Tedeschi winery. yummy…
