Yeargh! Matey!

What’s the name of the hats that pirates typically wear?

In movies, you see a lot with Napoleon-esque tricorn hats or bandanas wrapped around the head, but I think you’ll need to give us mroe info.

If you’re talking about the three-cornered number, it’s called a tricorn (imagine that).

However, if you’re talking about the big, high-crowned job with the swoopy-floppy brim and the huge curling feather, I think it was called a “sissy-boy-movie-hat” and anyone caught wearing it by a REAL pirate would have had his buckles swashed in a heartbeat.

Or would that be “his swashes buckled”?

A tricorn is just like a regular hat with the brim pinned up at three equidistant points, but the stereotypical pirate hat is pinned up at the front and back only, a bit like the hat that Napoleon is typically depicted (typically in non-contemporary art, it seems) as wearing, but taller and more exaggerated at the front.

Ah; it seems that the general shape of the pirate hat is called a bicorn.
