Yellow Submarine Re-make??

I heard that Robert Zemeckis is going to do a remake of Yellow Submarine.

(I saw this in an AP entertainment news item.)

Is this true, or is it just speculation?

I’ve heard it, too.

Blech. They’ll probably want it to have a plot, or a point - things the original did perfectly fine without.

Why can’t these idiots remake something that needs it rather than remaking perfection?

Remake Plan 9 from Outer Space. Please.

I can see the discussion in the board room.

“OK, obviously it needs more violence; a few gun fights will really spark it up - can’t you just see the slow motion of a bullet going through a blue meanie?. And Karate, how could they make this without any karate?”

“And we can change the submarine into a car so we can have car chases.”

“What about the nudity? Can you believe there is no nudity in this film at all? We’ve got to change that.”

“Also, we’ve got to get the crazed serial killer in there early if we expect to hold the 15-20 male demographic.”

“Finally, we’ve got to update the music. There is no way we are going to reach the youth market with lyrics that they can hear. We’ll drop all that peace and love crap and put in rap and heavy metal. Yeah, that’ll get the kids!”

“Yes sir, we’ve got a hit on our hands.”

Oh, nudity would have been more likely from 1 year after its release until 1995.

I like nudity, but it won’t happen.

What I think is truly likely is they’ll try it with CGI animation, so blue meanies and flying submarines and stuff look real.

Zemeckis seems really committed to CG animation despite his human characters looking uniformally creepy and awkward.

I have no intention of seeing A Christmas Carol because of the garish visuals, but RZ claiming it’s “finally doing justice to what Dickens wanted” (I’m paraphrasing) makes me mentally retch everytime I hear it in a preview.

The idea of someone doing a YS remake? Disappointing, but whatever. But him? Yuck.

Who’s he going to replace The Beatles with?

Just to get everyone in the mood, here’s a clip from Yellow Submarine Sandwich by the Rutles.

The Beatles actually didn’t provide their own voices in the original Yellow Submarine- they were voiced by impersonators. The project was done without their involvement by American animators. The Beatles at first didn’t want to be involved with the project because they thought it would turn out like the TV cartoon (which had the same producers and also utilitzed impersonators), but were pleased with the results and ended up filming a brief live-action scene for the ending.

All true, but if there are no Beatles, it’s not Yellow Submarine at all, and if you DO impersonate the vehicles, you’re now having people impersonate two dead guys.

But based on the link by GIGObuster I am wondering if he is just considering altering the extisting film so it works in 3D, not making an entirely new one.

I don’t get it… Wasn’t the whole point of the original that it had the Beatles in it?

All the songs, which were the core of the animated film were original Beatles songs sung by the Beatles. The impersonaters did the dialogue which served as the links between the songs.

The art was done by Peter Max. The talking was at best third place.

It’s one of my kids’ favorite movies. It’s how we hooked them on The Beatles. Blech.

Apparently not, because it didn’t.

To follow up on mobo’s post, here are the four principle voice actors from Yellow Submarine:

John - John Clive
Paul - Geoffry Hughes
George - Peter Batten
Ringo - Paul Angelis

As for the remake, while I’m not thrilled by the idea, if it ended up looking like this (particularly after the 1:30 mark) I’ll check it out.

He wasn’t involved, either:

Wow. That is freakin’ awesome. Tthe nostalgic tint to the early sections, then the raucous, otherwordly psychedelic imagery at the end… so lovely! I would absolutely watch a whole movie like that.

Holy shit.

Me: meh. meh. meh. meh. meh. (1:34 mark):eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

That is way cooler than Yellow Submarine.

Amazing - I would SO watch that!

For those curious- that animated clip Miller linked is the opening cinematic to The Beatles: Rock Band. Animation was by Passion Pictures, who are also responsible for the look of the animated band Gorillaz. Sean Baptiste of Harmonix, who developed the game, says that the game’s ending is animated in the same way and that “If you don’t cry when you see [the ending], you don’t have a soul.”
