I regret it. I regret bringing up the word “pit bull”. In my heart of hearts, I believe too many posters have a hidden agenda on either one side or the other of the “pit bull” war, and these posters start to read too much into what anyone writes on the topic.

I came into this thread to say that I find the whole idea of “what is a pit bull” confusing.

I disagreed with that. I think it is confusing. You yourself said it is confusing. So you and I agree. I am hopelessly trying to figure out what the conflict is between you and me right now. You and I agree that the topic is confusing. We agree that Sailboat broke it down very well, but we both disagree with him that it is simple.

Hidden agenda? As far as I can remember, I stick to supportable information widely attested to by recognized dog authorities (aside from personal anecdotes). This is one of those issues that, like racism (and frankly breedism is almost exactly analogous to racism), may have two sides, but that doesn’t mean the two sides are in some way equivalent, morally or scientifically.

And I think you’re putting to much stock into my choice of words “it isn’t hard to understand.” Perhaps I erred or came across as hostile – I assure you, I don’t have it in for you.

I was responding to your words, that pit bulls do not exist and that no one can give you a definition.

I gave you a definition. Sure, it’s not a one-word definition. But it’s not something I made up as part of any agenda, either.

I agree it’s complex in a sense, but this isn’t the only situation where more than one breed makes up a “type” of dog, or where a name is used for more than one breed. If I said a dog is a “collie,” what breed would you think I mean?

Can’t believe I’m getting back into it just as my bald spots are growing back. My first post was clearly a joke meant to point out how the hubbub about what constitutes a “pit bull” and anyone who took my post as dead serious, yes, I do think they may have some kind of bias due to position on pit bulls. Also, there is nothing wrong with having an agenda, but yes, many people on this board do, regarding pit bulls. And as I have said in other threads, I myself have gone from thinking pits are evil to knowing better, due to those who successfully pushed that message on this board. So nothing wrong with that, but yes, I do think that agenda gets in the way sometimes where people look at a joking post and furrow their brow and say, “Why, whatever do you mean? There is zero confusion on the matter, it is clear as crystal.”

ETA: I mean come one, I used the word ‘apitbullist’. If you took that dead seriously, then, yeah, you should just go ahead and admit that you have a bit of an agenda to make sure pits are always showcased in the best light.
