Yesterday opened Google News to headlines of David Bowie's death.

His real name is David Jones–you know, from The Monkees?

He’s also famous for his locker, which fell in the ocean.

He also starred in Labyrinth, as the delightfully evil Goblin King.

His son, Duncan Jones, is the writer/director of Moon and the upcoming Warcraft movie.

Actually, that’s a common misconception; he was a supporting actor, at best. The real star was David Bowie’s Package.

Is Duncan the same as Zowie Bowie?

Yes.
I’m assuming janeslogin is a Jane’s Addiction fan. Otherwise, why the tribute?

I assume it is paired with janespassword.

If I were Ian Hunter, it might make me want to give up music and go into insurance. I struggle and struggle trying to come up with something, and Bowie comes in, sits down, and immediately writes a hit song on the spot. “I’ll have it ready in a few minutes!” Maybe I’d wonder if music was the business I was cut out for.

But then we’d have never got Cleveland Rocks, so it’s good he’s not me.

Even if you don’t know who Bowie was, you must know who Bing Crosby was.

Wasn’t he David Crosby’s dad?

^ Did he lose his locker in the ocean, too?

I’ve been doing that last few days myself. Nobody mentioned Starman, I think it was on The Martian soundtrack.

So, um, did you know who Alan Rickman was?

Was this after or before the Canadians killed Randy Travis with a cannonball?

I’m 61, and I can relate to the OP.

That’s the only thing I know him from. Don’t recognise any of the singles listed on Wikipedia except “Little Drummer Boy,” and as that’s my least favourite Xmas song I’ve probably never heard his version of it.

Waters and Vedder, no. The rest of them, yes, though Merle, Springsteen and Diamond are the only ones I can name songs from.

His too. Which is why he changed it to sing with Crosby. It’s linked twice in this thread, give it a try. I promise your ears won’t bleed, even if you don’t like it.

What do you listen to? The OP was approaching 30 when Bowie first came on to the scene and many people have stopped listening to new music around that age. You, on the other hand, were around 15, which for most people is the age they’re getting into music, and much of his career falls into your prime music appreciation age. Obviously your musical interests lie elsewhere. Who would you name as your favorite artists, and what are your favorite songs?

You know, my parents are in the same range as the OP. The difference between you and them versus jane? I can’t imagine either other group announcing it to all and sundry.

Hell, I’m 47 and used to be a huge movie buff. But in the last decade or so, I’ve realized that all the twenty-somethings pretty much look alike and the films they usually make don’t help me figure them out. Because when you head past 30, you really don’t need too many coming of age stories anymore.

So, I just try to stay current enough so that the entire world hasn’t left me behind at 50. Which is what has happened to my best friend. Hasn’t heard any new music in probably two decades and couldn’t tell you which stars were which beyond who he enjoyed in high school. It’s sad and makes him feel isolated and adrift in current culture. That only gets worse the further behind he gets.

He’s 51.
