An ad for a Kia Rio, in the space between the OP and the first reply, in two separate threads now, one in MPSIMS and one in the Pit. Autoplaying video ad with noise. I did NOT click on it. I did NOT mouse over it. I did NOT interact with it in any way.
I’ll refer this to Ed and Jerry. Where are you situated, btw? If you don’t want to say publicly please send me a PM or email.
Sorry for your inconvenience.
Australia. My IP address points to Canberra, though I am not.
I got one too. Located in Oregon, for what it’s worth.
I will pass this information on. We regret your inconvenience.
Install an adblocker and/or turn off your speakers unless/until going to a website you want to hear (such as youtube perhaps). Yeah, sucks you should have to go through that, but nobody ever said life was non sucky.
Why THANK YOU for your INSIGHTFUL commentary on the situation and for pointing out a solution that NO PERSON EVER COULD HAVE THOUGHT OF!
Has it occurred to you that those of us who are getting these ads are getting them in situations where we aren’t able to install adblockers and where we need browser sound available, but want to browse the Dope at the same time?
EXCUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSE me for trying to help.
Maybe you should talk to whoever controls what you install on the computer about allowing you to install adblockers so you can browse the dope. Or will that get you in trouble for browsing on company time? Or perhaps its a library or computer lab and they don’t give a crap about helping you? Either way, I at least offered you a suggestion, if it doesn’t work in your convoluted situation you don’t have to jump down my throat.
Your suggestion was completely pointless and utterly useless, as most people who’ve browsed the dope for any length of time are aware of adblockers, what they are and what they do. Not to mention that posters in the past have been asked to report noise-making/auto-playing ads because they are not supposed to be part of the ad package that is being offered on this site. Interactive ads, sure - but not automatically playing ones.
Management at my work is fully aware that I browse in my personal time, and there is no issue with it. However they do not allow third party software to be installed on the system without going through a review process, and they are not willing to install adblocking software for their own reasons. And my situation is hardly convoluted. Many posters post from work yet have adblocked browsers on their home computer.
But you know, don’t let that stop you from marching into threads and telling people what they should do without even making an attempt to find out if they’ve already taken their own steps to minimise impact from obtrusive ads and are reporting it as a last resort.
I’m sorry this is still happening.
I have reported the situation and I hope management is looking into it.
While it’s a very frustrating and annoying thing to have to deal with, slapping at one another won’t help neither. So please don’t do that.
(Of course if you do have an issue to take up with another member of the Teeming Millions, there’s always the Pit.)
I think this is part of the problem. Someone reports something, someone “in charge” says they’ll look into it, it disappears for a week or so (either coincidentally or because someone actually took care of it), and then the whole cycle starts over. If the problem just seems to keep happening, people are going to make their own solutions, and tell others about them.
