Yet another "help me choose a new phone" thread

Yup, the old thing is turning into a crotchety senile wanker that gets winded running down a youtube video and takes forever to recharge.

Since I tend to ignore phone offerings and not keep up with the latest and greatest, I need help.

First off though, no iphones please. I despise apple and the few times I’ve been forced to use an idrone were all thoroughly unsatisfactory for me.

So, I don’t actually want, need, or can afford to purchase the latest and greatest in phones (when and why the hell did prices go from very rough $500 to $700 to over $1000!?!)

I like android and up until the last few months, my samsung j6, while not something I was particularly fond of, (how you can be fond of a smudgey touch screen rectangle of glass that requires an additional purchase of armor to help avoid and prevent damage is beyond me) but it was…adequate, I suppose, in its own way…I guess.

So help me out here, whats the not quite latest and greatest in phones that isn’t going to set me back a month’s pay.

I do all my intertubing on my phone, lots of videos, gets used as a reader quite a bit(loves me some Library of Congress and Gutenberg Project). Would prefer something with an actual jack for earphones, not bluetooth, because I will loose one or both of the earpieces rather sooner otherwise. Erm, removable sd slot is a must(I’d heard that those were disappearing on some phones) and finally, perhaps most importantly I’d like to not pay half or more of a month’s pay for the damn thing.

Suggestions?

Since the sd slot is a must, I would suggest the Samsung Galaxy S10e. I’m typing on one right now. I bought it new, last year, for $799. With the S20s out, I would imagine they’re under $500 now.

The body is small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket, but the screen is still a good size, 5.7 or 5.8 inches. The battery life on mine has been great.

I have 3 phones… 1st- is a hand me down IPhone, my main phone. Hate it with a purple passion.
2nd- my dedicated diabetic phone. A non descript Samsung of some sort. Don’t mess with it much.
3rd- my secret phone a Samsung ??. Piece of crap. It does what I want. I dropped it and it’s held together with duct tape.

Sorry, Dork, seems I’m not much help.
But the Samsung phones are all pretty good I think. Anywhere from $79 at Wal-Mart. Just according to how many bells and whistles you want.
BTW, my piece of crap Samsung secret phone takes dang good pix, and I go online all the time, shopping and messaging. I think I might have paid $99. for it.
I’m kind of a cheapskate about electronics.

Maybe something in the Galaxy A line, like an A20 or A30 (assuming that it is compatible with your carrier.)

I second the S10e. I have one for work and a personal one and really like it. the A30 has also gotten some pretty good reviews. I’d make a selection on these two based on cost.

I love my Pixel 3a. It does everything I need, the battery life is fantastic, and the price was right, at $399 for an unlocked phone.

It does everything on your list, except for the card slot.

I bet you can find it for less these days, now that the Pixel 4 is out and the Pixel 4a is on the way.

Moto G Power. $250, has sdcard slot, headphone jack, nice screen, camera that shoots landscape videos while phone is held upright. And best of all, it has a battery life of 3 days. My friend got one and the battery life is indeed impressive. Goes down about 34% per day.

Ok, I’m back with another question.

What should I expect if I buy a factory unlocked phone? What I mean is, are there differences in the apps that come preloaded? If I buy a Samsung (the brand I’m leaning towards) that is Verizon compatible but unlocked from the factory, obviously there shouldn’t be any vzw bloatware/spyware on it right? What about all the google garbage that came preinstalled on my current phone, gmail app, google Chrome browser, the various google media apps etc. Will that shite be there?

Farging facebook twitter snapchat etc

Some dumb weather app that I can’t even disable

I also suggest the Pixel 3a. It’s a great deal right now and you’ll have less crap installed than a Samsung. The Wirecutter agrees: The 5 Best Android Phones of 2023 | Reviews by Wirecutter
