The discussion about battleships and the USS Texas over in GD brought a fragment of memory to the surface. I remember reading a book, SF, had to be, that involved Texas succeeding from the Union, a battleship anchored in the middle of the Houston ship channel, and Israeli mercenaries bombing around the Southwest in tanks.
