I have been amazed at some of the obscure movies that people on this board have been able to ID for other people. So now it’s my turn. A couple years ago on a business trip, I caught part of a movie on HBO (about forty five minutes to an hour somewhere in the middle). Since I didn’t see it all, the details are kinda sketchy, so I apologize.
I’m about 90% sure that the title was a short two-word title like “The Something-er”. There were no “name” actors that I recognized. The main character was a dark-haired woman with a British accent who shows up in a small town out west, I think she was opening an antiques store or something like that. She was involved in some sort of relationship with a guy who used to live in the town and was now working for some bankers or developers who, I think, wanted to buy out the town or level it or something. And I also remember that in this town there was a diner that everybody hung out at that was run by a very sarcastic Vietnamese woman. That is about all I’ve got to go on.
Okay, so let’s try this…
Anybody know where I can get a copy of an HBO program guide from, say, September or October 2000? I tried looking on their web site but they don’t seem to have an archive of this kind of stuff.
I took the liberty of posting your question on the IMDB board, with less than successful results. Someone posited that it might be “Bagdad Cafe,” but looking at the description doesn’t match up well with your’n.
Thanks for the effort, Earl. I’m sure it’s some obscure independent film, probably something that went straight to video (or HBO). I believe the title referred to the former-townie-turned-developer-guy. Anyway, the reason I’m trying to track this movie down is because the female lead is a dead ringer for Mrs Shoeless. I’ve never seen her in anything before or since. I even made a note of the title at the time on the back of a business card so I wouldn’t forget, but apparently lost it. :smack: Oh well…
What year was the movie out? Rather, what year did you see it?
I believe it was sometime in early October of 2000 when I caught it on HBO. It appeared to be a fairly recent movie, I would guess it was made sometime in the mid to late 90’s.
Was there a dress put on top of a building like a flag at some point?
I don’t recall that, but it may have happened during part of the movie that I didn’t see. Like I said, I didn’t see the beginning and I didn’t see the end.
Woo-hoo! Thanks, Homebrew, I think that’s it. And that would explain why the name “The Conqueror” (John Wayne’s Genghis Khan movie) kept popping into my head. I knew that wasn’t it but that it was something similar.
I found a site with stills.
I love a happy ending! ::finishes bag of popcorn::
