Yet another music recommendations thread

I apologize in advance for another music recommendation thread; they do seem to be rather omnipresent. I rather enjoy them myself, though, so…

So I’m looking for some recommendations myself. I’m going on a rather long car trip in a few days, and have been in a sort of rut lately. I need some new music or I’ll go bonkers.

I like a fairly wide variety of music, and am open to at least trying out all sorts of things. Some of the bands I’m digging at the moment are:

The Clash, the Cure, New Order, the Sex Pistols, Thrice, AFI, the Faint, Operation Ivy.

Basically, punk of all stripes, some old stuff, some new stuff… I’m open to most other genres, though.

I’m particularly interested in exploring other electronica bands along the line of New Order (I’m already familiar with Interpol and Joy Division)… I don’t really like stuff without vocals however.

Recommendations of particular songs or albums would be most appreciated.

Don’t listen to much punk, and only really The Ramones, so it’s going to be mainly pop/rock/emo.

Emo, which happens to be “Emotional”, but isn’t all music emotional in some way? Anyway, it’s supposed to be more emotional than normal I guess:

A line allows progress, a circle does not by Brighteyes

Drunk Kid Catholic by Brighteyes

Sweetness by Jimmy Eat World

Pop/Rock:

Cover of Paint it Black by Gob

Creep, by Radiohead

Show me how to live, Audioslave

Every breath you take is great either by The Police or probably anybody who covers it.

Hey Jude, by The Beatles

Electronica:

All three of these Radiohead albums, in my personal order of favourite:

Kid A

Amnesiac

OK Computer

New Wave:

Kids in America, by Kim Carnes

She blinded me with science, by Thomas Dolby

One night in Bangkok, by Murray Head**

Please excuse my cheesy taste in New Wave music.

I think emo was reacting against “packaged” emotion, where, while the songs were written about whatm on the surface, could be taken as emotion, but when performed obviously meant nothing. When Whitney Houston sings “I will always love you,” it doesn’t sound like she’s singing of her heartfelt admiration of someone special in her life. It sounds like she sung a song about love because that’s what people buy. Emo sought to sing about emotional concepts as real things rather than songs being emotional by default.

And, for the OP, I suppose you might like The Cure for that 80s keyboardy sound, and for electronica with that more song based bent, how about a little Bis, Ettienne De Crecy or maybe even The Postal Service?

And if you like something akin to that New Order-style rudimentary electronics, how about a bit of electro? Fischerspooner, while apparently patchy can be alright (try the track Emerge), Peaches is too cool and Chicks on Speed are great, too. Also, The Dandy Warhols have been doing some more electronic-y stuff lately. The album isn’t brilliant, but We Used To Be Friends and You Were The Last High aren’t too bad at all.

Tanaqui, for some 80’s old school new wave, try Erasure, Echo and the Bunnymen, and maybe The Alarm.

You’re speaking my language here. Here are some bands I suggest:

Iris
Mesh
Anything Box
In fact, there is a great electropop/synthpop/industrial community over at Electrogarden where you will be beat over the head with newer song-based electronica. Good people, good music. Check it out.

Just found a new band that made me want to spike my hair, wear dark mascara, get depressed, and work in a record store.

The Prids

I reccomend the following:

Millencolin - Home from home
Fishbone - Fishbone 101 Nuttasaurusmeg (2 cd greatest hits and unreleased tracks)
Bad Religion - Stranger then Fiction

If you enjoy punk, pick up the CD Short songs for Short people… it’s on the Fat Wreck Chords label and is 101 30 second punk songs by 101 different bands.
