Fred_Winkle, if you continue to insult and display hostility to other posters you will find that your continued ability to post here will not be up to you. I strongly suggest if you have problems registering you get in touch with TubaDiva to resolve them. If you do not, this account is likely to be deactivated.
And, for transparency, which some people are so eager about, my former name was Harrington, and when I tried to log in with that name and my old password, I got several rejections. Despite your cries for a Nuremberg trial, I’m sure the mods will understand that and maybe help me, unlike unhelpful other users, trying to hang people, for some reason. The first thing I look for in an argument, with someone I disagree with, is their post count. Good job!
I understand how the feature works. It was pretty common to quote a whole post - as long as it was short - just so it was clear who you were replying to and about what. You can still do that in Discourse, just not as easily. Take Fred’s post above mine, for example. Who’s it to? Colibri, the post it immediately follows? That makes no sense - telling a mod what kind of mercy mods will or won’t make. Is it to me? Probably, but that makes no sense either - I didn’t call for a Nuremberg trial, or even report him for that matter. It’s basically incoherent without the clear chain.
Ok. Fine. I’ll contact the mods. I have no problem with that as I’m sure you have no problem understanding that I couldn’t log in with my former username and password, and that registering with a new username and password is not wholly ridiculous considering the radical change this message board has undergone.
Harrington, I find your username in the present system. Please email TubaDiva if you need to change your email or if you have password problems. Everyone has to rest their password on this new site.
I didn’t need to use a password the first time up, just enter in my e-mail. Then I got the chance to make a compliant (8-character) password. Maybe you did it wrong?
This is to Do_Not_Taunt because I want to test this out. I think when you quote someone, the system assumes that it’s to that person so there’s no reply to person. But if you don’t have a quote, the reply to person is shown in the post. I’m not sure about that, so I’m testing that out here. I hit the reply to you button but I’m not quoting you to see if it shows in my post that I’m replying to you. If this doesn’t work, then I see your point more clearly.
ETA: So that worked. Without a quote, if I am replying to you, it shows in the post, at least on my view.
It does, but which post of mine? I can click the reply arrow and see, but wouldn’t it more useful if the text were just right there? I assume it’s for space optimization (everyone hates seeing an entire, long post quoted with a one word reply), but as long as you’re quoting a short post, I think it’s the wrong tradeoff.
Awsome. Thank You. I’m not trying to be subversive at all. I wasn’t banned at the original SDMB, couldn’t login here with my old account, and felt accused by people associating my knowledge and post count.
No extension needed. Giving click-by-click directions here is difficult because the board looks very different depending on whether you’re on a computer, a tablet, or a phone, and also upon which theme you’ve selected.
But at least on my PC: Click your user icon at the upper right. In the pop-up that appears, click on your username at the upper left. That brings up the Discourse equivalent of the old vBulletin User Control Panel.
On that page there’s a menu across the top. Click the rightmost entry “Preferences”. In the menu along the side click the bottommost entry “Interface”. The topmost input item on that page is a dropdown labeled “Themes” with 9 choices. Once you make a selection click [Save Changes] down at the bottom.
Try them all; at least one of those should make you happier.
I suppose. And I might not like it when it shows up on preview and then disappears later to make it seem like I’m talking to myself. But I sort of like some of the etiquette suggestions from the system.
Like I just got scolded for posting to you too much. Annoying perhaps, but I don’t like when people go back and forth constantly. It’s nice to get a reminder.
