yoghurt vs asprin face packs

I was mooching around on here on day when found a reference to crushed asprin home made face packs being the best face packs ever - so did some investigations and tried them myself. I thought they were just ho-hum, wondered if they are great for people with bad skin or something?
Then saw a reference to yoghurt face packs, so gave it a go and wow, this makes your face feel fab, way better than asprin.
Anyone else found this?
BTW I think it is age making me even interested in something to which I have shown no interest in the last 39 years!

Salicylic acid, a.k.a. aspirin, has been around for a long time in varying strengths as both a chemical peel and in all those proprietary anti-acne creams and washes. Ya wanna be careful with yer dosages in just randomly applying crushed and/or dissolved aspirin to your face, because you can give yourself a chemical peel that is, shall we say, less than salutary. If you want a salicylic acid facial, personally I’d stick with the OTC stuff, that way you know what you’re putting on your face.

Yogurt has also been around for a long time as a facial, too. Also mayonnaise. And cucumber slices. And oatmeal. And egg whites. And honey.

Also, apparently, milk of magnesia, although I have to say that personally I think it might be put to better use elsewhere.

There is an entire website devoted to talking about aspirin face packs - didn’t seem to be too much to worry about in terms of aspirin strength. Most people suggested 4 aspirin. Many piped in with having bad skin etc and nothing OTC or prescribed worked and were talking as if aspirin was a miracle face pack.
Just saying that from trialing both methods (for my kind of normal skin) yoghurt was superior in effect.

That works well to cut oil, actually. When I’m feeling really greasy, I wash my face then splash a little of that stuff on.

Nitpick: Acetylsalicylic acid. And an interesting fact: when exposed to too much moisture over a period of time, the two acids break apart, becoming acetic acid and salicylic acid. Most (all?) vinegars are acetic acid, which is why old aspirin smells like vinegar. That’s why bottles of aspirin have cotton, not to stop it from shaking, but to absorb moisture.

Sorry for the denseness here, but what’s a face pack? Do you just slather yogurt on your face? And does it matter what kind of yogurt? How long do you leave it on and then just wash it off?

Thanks for the info. I have a huge pimple on my face right now (my first in a loooong time), so this stuff is interesting me.

Oh me too! I have two tips that work for me, and I alternate them depending on which I think of first. My sister swears by dabbing honey on zits, says it’s anti-bacterial. And it works for me. My friend Nikki suggests a drop of Visine on the offending blemish, as its job is to reduce redness and swelling. THAT works for me, too.

I know diddly about facials and or masques, though.

Honey, both containing a bit of hydrogen peroxide and being EXTREMELY “dry” with lots of sugar, is quite good as an antibacterial agent when used externally.

LifeOnWry and bouv, thanks for the tips. I did put some hydrogen peroxide on it the other night. I had no idea others did that. I just did it because I thought if the skin broke then at least the surrounding area would be clean. I don’t have any visine but honey sounds like an interesting idea. How long do you leave it on? Because I’m not walking around with honey on my face all day. I’d be a walking target for bees and other flying stuff. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well apparently the ground up aspirin (with a tiny bit of water) into a paste and left on the face for 20 mins will clear up pimples and blotchy skin.
You just smear it all over your face and wash off afterwards, use a cleanser then your usual moisturizer.
As I’ve said, I don’t have problem skin which is why I didn’t find it so amazing. I do however, love the yoghurt effect - again, smear all over face and leave for 20 minutes then wash off and do this about twice a week.
Haven’t tried honey on the face, but the nurses who visit homes in the area where my parents live have been trialing a honey wound dressing. There is a honey research centre in the nearest city. Dad had it used on his foot wound - the wound healed quickly but unbeknownst to everyone, infection had already entered the bones and he had his foot amputated in the end!

 Heh, I think I read the same thread! I was also intrigued by the suggestion and tried it out. However, I did some research on the net first, and found one site with the suggestion to grind up the aspirin, mix it into a bit of yoghurt, add a dollop of honey and voilà! Slathery goodness with all the advantages combined. Worked for me!

I tried the aspirin and honey, but I might try the aspirin and yoghurt now - thanks!

Thanks! This might be worth a try.
