Humm. If all scout troops were that well integrated and interesting then would it be necessary to bribe the scouts into fund raising?
I was in scouting from cubs through getting an eagle, so I’m very familiar with complete packages, including service projects, scout camping, earning merit badges, fund raising activities, etc.
I really like the idea behind scouting, and believe that it is in the interest of society to support organizations which help produce responsible adults. On the other hand, society has no vested interest in simply providing handouts of toys to average kids. Parents can provide them without the need to hit up other adults.
Programs which are well run would be much less likely to allow a Toys R Us shopping spree with donated cash.
When I was in my church youth group, we planned various fund raising activities over the years, both for charity and for our own activities. For the most part, we did it independently of adult supervision, but they did veto or provide guidance when necessary.
