Chasing Dreams, try the Gap. They have little sizes - their mens’ XS sweaters are only a little big on me, so some of the guys who shop there must be very small (for guys). Their website lets you pick 29" waist, so their stores might carry the same.
Pfft. My 25-y-o son is 6’2" and weighs about 130, and he can find pants that fit. It is not easy, though.
When he was in his teens, he was already tall, but instead of 130 he weighed about 90 pounds. A couple of times I had to get him girl’s jeans at the Gap, and then disguise the fact. If he wanted things that fit around the waist and didn’t hit him mid-calf.
Of course when he was in the highschool the fad was for oversized pants that fell off. He had no problem finding those.
Hell, I ain’t even close to those specs (meaning I’m on the bad side of them) and **I ** can’t find anything that fits, either!!
6’4", 205 lbs, 37" waist, 34" inseam. Think I can find shorts that I can wear without holding them up with my hand? Think I can find pants in the store that aren’t cut “Extra Loose?” Yeah, I could stand to lose a few pounds, and fer sure my gut oughta be around a 34-36 measurement.
But go into a typical Sears or J C Penneys and look at jeans of even Dockers. TRY to find a normal or trim fit. These abortions are cut for Graf Zeppelin men. I could fit two of me into one leg of a pair of pants 38W/34I.
Sorry 'bout the rant. But, Those Of You Who Order Clothing: There are some of us who actually want to wear clothes that fit. Which is why I get my pants and shirts from Land’s End…the internet store, not their Sears outlet.
Thank you, Chasing Dreams, for a very good post!
Unless of course he is athletic/muscular in which case the BMI isn’t a reliable indicator.
I am exactly the same height and weight as you - exactly - and my waist size is 32 in. A few months ago I was down to 142 lbs and I still had a 31 in waist. What are you doing that I’m not?
Perhaps he has a very slim bone structure and yours is medium or broad?
Go to a western wear store. All those cowboys are required to fit into 29-32 slim fit Wranglers or they aren’t allowed into the clubhouse.
There are these things called Tailors. Look one up.

If you have a Kohl’s in your area you should be able to find Levi 501’s with a 29" waist. I have several pair in my closet that I purchased from there.
Well, part of the reason is that I race bicycles and I have a sprinter type body so most of the muscles are in my legs. I have massive quads and butt for a guy my size because of all those fast twitch muscles, which is handy when a race ends in an uphill sprint.
Another reason is because of my bone structure, I have a naturally small waist and relatively broad shoulders. My body type is like that of Bruce Lee’s except I’m not as lean and I have much bigger legs.
My problem has been I need pants in a length that is 1 to 2 inches shorter than the stores carry in any waist size. I have to be careful to buy narrow bottomed leg cuts so they gather material on top of the shoes, instead of me walking on them all the time. They look like crap if you have to take them up at the bottom, and I don’t want to anyway. I have a long torso too, so the tall shirt sizes still only just tuck in. It’s a family trait in the guys.
I’m not fat, I’m just a whole lot of man.
Well, I swear I’m not saying this just to be contrary, but… 5’6"/151lbs/29 waist; unless you’re quite muscular, you sound like a fatty to me. No offense intended.
Though, what passes for “average” today, I would generally call overweight.
But that doesn’t mean I don’t understand where you’re coming from. I do. Last time I went looking for jeans, the smallest size I could find was a 28 (ha!) hidden deep within a sea of 32s/34s/38s. It’s ridiculous. And even if I do find the right size, which is exceedingly rare, the length is never long enough. Apparently all men are very round, with short, stumpy legs.
I either go to the womans section, or buy my jeans online now. It’s sad.
In fat land the stores only have 28 - 34 left after a month, and racks of small and medium shirts.
I have some trouble finding pants. I have thick thighs from years of swimming, and apparently, I have an ass. Pants get tight in the upper thigh/crotchular region.
Harumph.
Whether or not you’re young (I have no idea of your age, or even if you’re a man or woman), you have the measurements of a very young adolescent man. Which means that shopping at a store which caters to the middle aged middle class schlub is not going to find you what you want. Go to the Gap, or to Old Navy, or even to Target. Go somewhere where young people shop, and you’ll find more stock shaped for young man shaped bodies. Although, to be honest, I haven’t seen many 29" jeans since the nineties when sagging started. Even the 29" waist kids buy 34" jeans, so retailers stopped stocking the small sizes.
Also, you checked the shelves, not just the hanging racks, right? The shelves have a better range of sizes and are organized better. The hanging racks are for the trendy quick-to-move stuff, the shelves hold the old workhorse Levi’s and Wranglers.
I, on the other hand, go to the “black” neighborhoods to shop, 'cause they stock more items in shapes which accommodate my badonkadonk, even though I’m a white chick. I do not go to Contempo or The Limited and expect to find anything in my shape.
(My husband was a 28"/37" when we married. Tailors, indeed! I’m much happier now that he’s at a 36"/36" and easier to shop for. And he’s still skinny, just differently shaped than he used to be.)
That is so funny. My husband’s last GF before me apparently had giant bazooms. He told me she shopped in the black neighborhoods, too. He said even Wal-Mart stocks different bra sizes depending on the demographics of the neighborhood. Who knew?
Bah humbug. The fashion industry AND the BMI are full of crap. I stand 5’7 and weigh in at 160 lbs at less than 12% body fat. According to the BMI I’m damn close to being overweight. I’ve seen a slow progression towards a rangy, bony, skinny becoming the ideal over a fit, properly muscled, body that carries a healthy amount of body fat. Though my chest and shoulder dimensions haven’t changed in the last 8 years, I’ve gone from a men’s medium, to a large and now in some stores, an XL. The BMI completely fails to take into account body frame, genetic heritage, athletic practice, and sundry other considerations that play into a person’s total weight.
For the record, it’s damn hard to find 34-28 pants too.
I have a WAG; it’s Back to School time, and your size pants have been a big seller; ergo they’re in short supply ATM.
I was wondering what happened to my other GI Joe. Get off the internet and back into Barbie’s corvette, Joe.
By the way, I’m many inches taller and have a lower index than you do. I have little trouble finding cloths – normally I just order everything – give it a try. I think your problem is not that everyone is fat (even if they are) it’s that you are teenie (no offense) and haven’t discovered the wonders of internet ordering.
