It’s a cheap discourse marker that screen writers use to signal: “This character is now going to tell it how it is”–i.e., “set boundaries.”
That montage really shows it up. Hat’s off to whoever cut it together.
This is one thing I love about the internet. People are able to (relatively) quickly cut together stuff to call out the cliches of bad writing.
It’s the worst kind of cliche: it’s instantly recognizable as a cliche and nobody actually says it.
I see a TVtropes about people not getting things that have been explained to them, but is there a trope entry for this thread’s topic?
On a similar vein, “You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”
It’s not ominously scary anymore, guys.
You just get it, Marley, do you? Cliches and dramatic convention are important for drama. They help the audience follow the story.
