You know it's time to turn on the furnace when...

My heat does not go above 63 even in the dead of winter. Like my dad used to say, if you’re cold, put on a sweatshirt.

Do you know how many pop-ins from relatives I avoid when it starts getting cool out, simply because I refuse to crank the heat for their comfort? I tell you, heating your home has it’s downside, too.

They finally turned the heat on in our dorms last week, but I rely solely on my space heater - otherwise, I get the Icky Boy Smell from downstairs via the airvents.

That said, I say that the vast majority of you all are wimps. According to weather.com, it right now is 38 degrees out in Santa Fe, but it feels like 29. My window is still cracked open.

(fine, I grant that it got up to the mid-60’s today and I spent most of the day in jeans and a T-shirt. But that’s high-altitude desert for you.)

This gives your username a whole new meaning!

[sub]Actually, I dont’ know the original meaning.[/sub]

We have ours on 68, but turn it off during the day. My husband controls the thermostat with an iron fist. A couple of weeks ago, I was home from work because I was sick. He called and left me a message that I could turn on the heat, if I wanted to. I was like, “Hey, thanks for your permission!”

I grew up in south Alabama, and now I live in north Alabama, and I don’t know if my body will *ever *adjust to this cold climate.

We had our first frost this morning. Should have turned on the heat last night - we probably will tonight. Need to break out the electric mattress pad too.

I considered the electric mattress pad for camping. Are they more effective than electric blankets in fighting off the cold? Almost all I found for sale, were selling to the truckers.

We turned ours on this weekend. I’ve been resisting, but when I procrastinate about getting dressed, using the bathroom, etc because I don’t want the cold air hitting my body, it’s time to heat the house. I doubt that’ll stop the cats from getting into bed with us, though.

Truckers? Hmm. I’m talking about an electric mattress cover, that goes on a bed on top of the mattress and underneath the fitted sheet. I like it better than an electric blanket - something about the heat rising, maybe.

Turned the furnace on a few weeks ago when we had a mini cold snap, then turned it off. Turned it back on again this past weekend when highs were in the upper 40’s. Luckily, I have a programmable thermostat - you can save a fair amount of moolah with them. I also cheat and turn the light on just under the thermostat. Heats the air up tricking the thermostat and leaving the furnace off. That way when LilMiss whines about it being cold I just tell her to check the thermostat - Look! It’s 75F in here! Balmy!!

But, being MissThrifty, the only time I have it set to 68F is from 7-9pm and 6-730am. At night (9pm-6am) it’s 63F otherwise 65F. We’re planning on slapping some more insulation down here in the basement because it gets friggin’ chilly. Last winter was hell working down here. We’re also doing the plasticing of the windows (not all of them though) as our windows, despite being relatively new, are drafty.

Oooh! Oooh! I come from the East Coast originally, so I know what a furnace is! It’s the setting you switch the thermostat to when the temperature falls under 70.

Bring on the cold! I sleep with the windows open in the middle of winter.

I got a truckers supply magazine because of a previous tenant. That was where I found out about them. They sell them to run on the Rig’s battery power. The truckers seemed to like them for the sleeper. The fact that the warmth is beneth you was supposed to make them better than electric blankets. I don’t want to hijack the thread, so I woun’t post about this here anymore. Thanks

AHHAHAHAHAHAHA! {wipes tears away} Stop it - you guys are killing me!

I’ll take my cold-adapted body over a warm-climate-adjusted body any day - the new immigrants I see walking around with two parkas on in the middle of summer look sooo uncomfortable.

Back in college, my favorite times of year were spring and fall, when all the students from hot climates (places like Southeast Asia and Latin America) were bundled up in heavy winter coats, while us locals were wearing no coats or jackets and, more often than not, short-sleeved shirts

I’m in a similar situation. We only have one radiator in our entire apartment, so hopefully that’ll be enough. I haven’t spent a winter in this place yet, but the previous tennant said it was always warm.

In my previous apartment, I was on the top (6th) floor, and the lower floors did such a good job heating me that I barely turned my radiators on.

Also, heat is included in the rent (it’s pretty hard to meter steam heat).

The problem here is that the thermostat is controlled by the person who lives downstairs, who spends all day sitting in the kitchen wearing longjohns under her clothes while she sits next to a kerosene space heater that warms her, but not the rest of the house. And I’ve lost so much weight this past year that I feel the cold like I’ve never felt it before. I’m very much a “barefeet and sandals until the first snow” kind of girl, and I still had my window open last night. But dang! Natural gas prices MAY double, but they haven’t yet, so let’s use a little heat while it’s still cheap! It’s cold upstairs here! Or it will be. I thought about getting electric blankets or space heaters, but the electric costs more than the gas does.

They said the Farmer’s Almanac says we have a 50-50 chance of a mild winter here. I have to buy a new coat this year, and the wool one didn’t keep me warm at all last year, so I guess I’m going for down. I never realized how much my fat insulated me!
