Workers drain a barrel of rum, only to find Captain Morgan inside. Special taste, indeed. Another call for the barfy smiley.
Sounds too much like an urban legend to me
Is the Reuters source genuine?
Whoa, snopes is fast, there is already an addition reporting the sighting of the Hungarian report. The implication is that until something is confirmed, this is just a retelling of the rumor.
Here’s the Reuters link
I’m disappointed that Reuters is reporting something second hand from a magazine article on some Hungarian website. I might have expected that from Annanova, but not Reuters.

Make your own jokes. This stuff writes itself.
I heard this story from Paul Harvey during yesterdays news.
Bullshit?..Or Not???
And it is not even a new UL: They were “tapping” Nelson 200 years ago.
I think it has to be bull, as all of the details exist as elements of extant legends
Oh, nuts. The linked site looked legit-it wasn’t an email in a long train of same. Apologies to all for spreading of bovine excrement.
“Hungary workers get shock” huh?
Way to go Yahoo. Seems more like they were thirstary.
Here’s the original article. Maybe pulykamell will stick his head into the thread and give us the high points. I smell a rat, personally.
I’m pretty fluent in Hungarian, although I sometimes have trouble reading the extra fanciful language used in newspaper articles.
It seems to pretty much be relating the same unlikely story as the english version.
Here’s a translation of the bolded part at the beginning.
The wife of a diplomat buries him in rum.
Workers renewing the house of a szegedi family were taking home by the liter the good-tasting rum in the 300 liter cask. When the last drop ran out, they wanted to move the cask out of the way but something was still rattling/sloshing inside. They opened the cask, and a shriveled up corpse fell out.
Was it wrong for me to read the last line in a pirate accent? “Yarrr, I be thistarrrrry.”
I don’t think you should feel bad about it; these latest posts add an actual family name to the story, which is quite unusual for an UL, but even if it is bogus, it still ended up passing through a major, serious new organisation, so no wonder it looked legit.
Where do you see a family name?
If you mean Szeged, that’s the name of a city.
In my translation, I should have put Szeged, not szegedi.
Oops, I just misread your translation. sorry.
Reuters got whooshed, IMHO. I heard this in the morning on Bob & Tom, and was yelling “Check Snopes, Christy Lee!” at the radio.
My daily morning paper got whooshed, too, but they normally print their stuff straight from Reuter’s. I’m not surprised.
Well, if I have to choose between the worm in the tequila bottle or the corpse in the rum …
I’ll have the whiskey.
Me too. I sent a feedback email saying just that to the Reuters website.
