BA once upgraded me to Club Class. Suddenly the 9-hour flight seemed a bit too short. In the morning, I got to customize my English breakfast. Lucky me!
I lived in Europe for about ten years, and still go there from time to time, and for trips to and from the States I much preferred taking BA, Air France or KLM to any of the American lines. Mostly it seemed to be just a bit more in the way of amenities, such as a wider and more interesting selection of movies, and a bit more attention from the cabin staff. No real difference in comfort, in economy at least, although I tend to avoid Lufthansa because for some reason their seats are sheer torture for me to sit in. Another thing I noticed from this is that the level of advertising one is bombarded during the flight seems much lower on the European lines.
So yeah, I don’t see any issues taking BA.
There are only two things that I seriously hold against BA.
The first is Terminal 5
The second is that the one and only time they upgraded me was on a London-Amsterdam flight - less than an hour!
I fly BA regularly between London and the US. While flying cattle class on a long-haul flight is never going to be a barrel of laughs - especially with a small child, such as I have - it’s better than most of its competitors (including Virgin which used to be excellent and has noticeably deteriorated in quality over the years). Even the food is decent by airline fare standards.
If you pay the extra for World Traveller Plus (or get bumped up) you get more legroom and what I think are the old Business Class seats with economy class service, and if you make it into Business Class…well, that’s a whole other level of nice.
T5 is a tad overdesigned, I admit, but it’s gotten better to get around. Plus they have some excellent restaurants on the other side of security.
Mostly what annoys me about BA is that I live much closer to Gatwick but if I want to fly to the US I have to go to T5 at Heathrow. You pays your money etc etc.
I’ve flown long haul on BA a couple of times, and was pretty impressed. The cabin crew were really nice and helpful, and drinks flowed freely even in economy. Seat back entertainment was good, with a wide range of current films and classics on demand. Certainly miles better than my experience on Virgin on a similar route.
In weighing up the benefits of Economy plus, I phoned them, and they were unbelievably helpful. The bloke on the phone told me the flight was only about half full, and actually recommended paying the little extra for pre-allocated economy seating, booking us a window and an aisle in the knowledge that the middle seat wouldn’t be needed. Really helpful.
I’ve flown BA to Europe twice- once to Gatwick, once to Heathrow, and I’ve flown United, AA and KLM as well. I’ve also flown BA from London-Prague, Budapest-London and London-Rome.
BA’s fleet may not be the very newest, but the flight attendants are extremely professional and competent- they’re very polite, although not necessarily friendly. On a long haul flight, this makes a difference- if they’re always there with what you need and a “Yes sir”, it goes a lot further with me after 8 hours in a stinky aluminum tube than a chatty one who doesn’t show up with the drinks, blanket or headphones in a timely fashion.
I’ll fly BA preferentially over United or AA for long haul flights, but I’m not sure if I’d choose BA over KLM for the same route and price; KLM was a very pleasant experience as well.
I think they don’t like it when you call them “stewie”.
