You know, there’s a Trump variation on the old joke “nobody missed Lambeth except the Luftwaffe,” but I won’t risk making it
Franco is still dead. I don’t miss him and know of nobody that does. Same will be with trump. There will be other bad hombres, and perhaps mujeres, and I will hate them or despise them or whatever as I see fit and fight in my way against them. But they will not make me miss trump. I don’t think that anyone in a position of power will ever in my lifetime be as stupid as he is. I hate that.
And now, on top of that, he is getting exponentially senile. No, no true Scotsman will ever miss him.
Gish Gallop might. Trump was very close.
The only way I’d miss Trump is if he dies before he gets the full extent of the comeuppance he deserves. Other than that, not for a femtosecond.
I disagree that the man who gave us the Civil Rights Act (which NEVER would have passed without him) and Medicare was evil.
I was going to liken missing Donnie with missing a pimple on my butt, alas I was beaten to the post.
If he is defeated, then democracy will have barely survived. This will be akin to being grazed in the ear. If he wins, then authoritarianism will reign in the US forever. Will I miss the biggest threat to freedom in the nation’s history? Will I miss the most evil person the US has ever produced? Not on your nellie.
Even when he is gone, the danger remains. The scum of the earth, those who now feel empowered to express their vile hatred and bigotry, will cry out for a new champion. Will another disgusting pig be able to capture the evil magic that allows DJT to dupe the masses and form a cult? We don’t know. Whatever he has may be hard to duplicate, but certainly others will try.
Once Trump goes, there will be a mob of seething racists looking for their next excuse to lash out. Some completely cynical douchebag will find them and nurture that resentment. Just because we don’t yet know who this person is, doesn’t mean they aren’t out there.
The one factor in America’s favor is that red state Americans have a shorter life expectancy than the rest of America, if enough of them follow Trump into the light, we might survive. But climate collapse is out there ready to take American fascism to exciting new heights.
Whatever he does … clearly appears to be enough for his base.
On those rare occasions when I’m forced to engage with true Trump supporters, they nearly always top the list of his ‘admirable virtues’ with his undying, unwavering, unparalleled, and inarguable love for America and his deep and abiding faith.
You literally could not make this stuff up. Well … conservative media can, but not the collective ‘you.’
Trump is Supply. The people who back(ed) him are Demand. As long as there exists sufficient demand for a ‘leader’ like Trump, there will be supply.
Trump’s machinery identified them, turned over their rocks, and began rhetorically hammering on them without ever letting up. His success has been shocking (unless you’re familiar with early-30’s and 40’s Germany, of course).
And I agree that Project 2025 is a wash, rinse, repeat concept. The Heritage Foundation has been hard at it for 40+ of their 50 years in the business. It’s matchmaking: they’re just trying to find the right puppet for their manifesto du jour.
And the thing about Trump is: he is the very definition of a stateless actor – a true mercenary who will say and do anything for money, fame, and power.
If a Heritage Foundation couldn’t find another who’s as purpose-built for scams and demagoguery as Trump, then they’d have to find somebody whose ideology comes close enough to Project 2025 to champion it, or … Heritage is back in rewrites.
It’s time to get the Deplorables to the table, and for Harris/Walz to figure out what’s really important to them (ie, the Deplorables), and then determine how much of that is actually worth doing, regardless.
Trump woke his voters up. I doubt they’re going back to sleep quickly or readily.
Take the iconic power of the prop flag and Bible out of Trump’s grubby, heathen, philistine hands, and bring these folks to the table. Maybe there’s a deal to be made.
Plenty of voters go to sleep every four years. Through death. 10% of Trump’s 2016 voters are already dead.
Trump’s not even a particularly successful Republican. People really need to give up on this magic formula business.
Well it took most of 54 posts before somebody who knows their onions intervened.
Well done.
The past couple of weeks haven’t been the best for SDMB electoral pundits, has it?
There was those Stop Panicking pundits up on their stump where “Biden stepping aside will guarantee a Trump win”, where a blood spattered fist was going to represent the “image which guarantees Trump a second stint” and now the dialogue seems to morphed into the “Harris will win 400 EC votes” whilst the pollster needles remain intractably in the “too close to call” zone. And now it’s the end of US Fascism in perpetuity.
In a country where 30% of the populace want a fascist at the helm and 40% is a landslide victory. And the root cause of the fascist dalliance is that it is so lucrative, much akin to televangelists. Nobody is going to go broke claiming they want to make America great again. This is not a fringe, underground movement. It’s the American dream. It’s I got mine. It ain’t ever going away,
Who was it who said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty”? We’re seeing that now in real time.
Indeed, Project-2025 blows up at this time precisely because Heritage was able to identify an opening and present it as “here we have what fills it”.
With the GOP not really having a proper platform other than a few general platitudes and “whatever Trump wants”, and a huge crop of down-ballot candidates in state and Congressional races with no real knowledge of statesmanship who look at the office as just an influencer gig with power to subpoena, this was the Project team’s break to “sell” to much of what passes for the GOP an off the rack prepackaged platform for the establishment of an illiberal Republic. That those down-ballot types will just swallow whole and gaslight themselves that it must have been the Republican position and even that of the Founders all along (since they never understood it anyway).
The authors of P-2025 (or 2029, or 2033…) don’t really care about Trump per se they really care about putting into office such office holders as will follow the blueprint shamelessly to dismantle the established order and replace it with the oligarchy they and their kind seek. What he is right now is their best bet to do so with broad support and no “buts” about it.
So, then- somebody already missed him?
too soon?
A hive of scum and villainy? Look, there was trump, Haley, desantis, and Christie. Of those 4 only two I would call 'scum" they other two are just wrong. I would love to go back to the days of GWB sr, a President that was )IMHO) “just wrong”.
There already is- DeSantis.
Please. “Fascist wannabe”. trump isnt competent enough to be a real fascist.
Damn, that’s the best description of them I’ve ever seen.
“How do you get to Carnegie Hall?”
It’s also good advice for crossing the street.
I got about 30ish responses in before I lost interest and never saw this point made…
Most of Trump’s idiotic base has only ever heard of him because of his stupid show The Apprentice. None of the other repub fuckwads have had that kind TV popularity.
Would you accept “ambitious, soulless lickspittles?”
With Trump gone, the MAGAt’s will loose their enthusiasm, crawl back under their rocks. Even if another racist asshole comes along, they are not going to have the support Trump has.
I guess all con men need charisma. I don’t see it, but then I’m not a fool. What are those yard signs? “I’m a Republican, but not a fool. VOTE HARRIS”
As far as what is next? Some will try to replace Trump, I think many will back peddle. ‘Trump who?’
While we do have to fight, a little hope is important.
I remember when Trump was first elected, lots of people here were smugly complacent that he wouldn’t be that bad and now I’m hearing the complacency again. Just like in 2016, I’ll say : you’ll see.
