You want one more drink for the road ?

When’s the last time you heard that phrase ?

Its got to be at least 15 years ago for me.

I heard it coming out of my own lips like a few weeks ago. Beers at restaurants and bars are 6 bucks a pop, versus 2 or so in my fridge. Granted this is a bit reverse of the typical usage. I’ve used it the original way a few times if I want a buzz but don’t want to have any more drinks when I get home.

Actually, on second thought. Scratch all of that. I know I’ve expressed the sentiment before but I don’t think I’ve ever used those exact words. Strange.

I would just ask the bartender for a “go-cup.”

Johnny Carson’s last night, when Bette Midler crooned him the song.

I use it all the time in this joke:

René Descartes was drinking in a pub. Just before closing, the barkeep asks ‘Would you like one for the road?’ Descartes says, ‘I think not.’ … And suddenly vanishes!

About 20 minutes ago. But it was Boz Scaggs asking, and I was already at home, so…sure.

Never, unironically. My favorite usage was Cookie Monster as Little Red Riding Hood on Monsterpiece Theatre saying it about a chocolate chip cookie. “One for me baby and one for the road!”

1994 in earnest from an aged great aunt.

A co-worker said it too me in 1991. It was the first and last time I’d ever heard it in real life. He meant he was buying one more bottle of beer to drink in the car on the way home! I was horrified and let him know. Actually went on in lecture/nagging mode for quite some time. Wonder if he’s still alive.

Legality aside, I’m not sure that drinking in the car is actually much worse than getting in the car just after drinking a bunch. Weren’t you both doing that, carlotta?

I wasn’t drinking with him. He had finished his shift earlier than me, had been drinking at the bar (we were waiters).
