A friend of mine sent me a link to a standard PC ‘kettle’ power cable on ebuyer.

The product reviews (at least the first couple of pages of them) are priceless. I especially liked this one:

For all those wanting to know what the length is, it is the measured distance along the cable between the two ends once the cable has been laid out in a straight line. It is easiest to obtain after taking out of the packaging. For optimum results, three people are required: one to hold one end, another to hold the opposite end to the one the first person is holding, and a third person to take the measurement, suitably equipped with a measuring device clearly marked in units of length of choice (popular choices include centimetres, millimetres or, if over the age of 50, inches). If measuring is attempted before the cable is connected to the mains supply, survival is likely.
