Your 5 favorite Brit-coms

Since Larry Mudd 's post in the sitcom thread included some British shows, how about a thread just for those? What are your favorite Brit-coms?
I realize the Brits on the board probably have at least a year’s head start on us Yanks as far as new ones go, but let’s go for it anyway.

Mine (in no particular order):

Blackadder (all series)
Fawlty Towers
The Young Ones
Red Dwarf
Open All Hours

Red Dwarf
Blackadder
Fawlty Towers
The Good Neighbors
(tie) No, Honestly and My Hero

In no particular order.

Red Dwarf
Black Books
Monty Python
BlackAdder

Well, I can’t think of a 5th one at the moment.

  1. Young Ones
  2. Are You Being Served
  3. Monty Python
  4. Ballykiss Angel (I’m including it, even though it’s Irish)
  5. Absolutely Fabulous

Blackadder
Fawlty Towers
The Thin Blue Line
Solo
Brittas Empire

Ballykissangel I liked, but it was more Brit-ama than Brit-com.

The Young Ones
Blackadder
(all of them)
Coupling
Red Dwarf
Monty Python’s Flying Circus

And Good Neighbors for good measure.

 Okay, then –

Steptoe and Son
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
Father Ted
The Young Ones
Blackadder
and Red Dwarf

I don’t know how I missed Blackadder the first go-round.

C’mon, I was list padding. I needed something to stretch out to five. However, you’re right. I guess Vicar of Dibley is out then too?

On the Buses

Declan

Nothing with Dawn French in it could ever be considered anything but comedy.

Steptoe and Son
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
Till Death Us Do Part
The Young Ones
Blackadder
Fawlty Towers

Blackadder (all)
The Young Ones
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python’s Flying Circus
Does Jeeves and Wooster count?

Mine:

Open All Hours

Blackadder

Are You Being Served?

Mr. Bean

Mulberry.

Has anyone else heard of that last one? My cable company swithched PBS feeds one time, and I started watching it. Then they switched again, and I missed the last few episodes.

It was about an older lady and the couple who took care of her. Another character was the son of the angel of death, who was supposed to “take her”, so it was a kind of comedy drama. (sorry for the hijack)

Blackadder
Fawlty Towers
'Allo 'Allo
The Britas Empire

And I can’t decide between Red Dwarf and Spaced for my final entry.

Fawlty Towers
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (Is this out on DVD or VHS in America? I’d LOVE to find a copy of the whole series.)
Blackadder
The Thin Blue Line
Rising Damp
Monty Python’s Flying Circus (tho’ really a sketch comedy, not a Brit-com, per se)

I can’t remember the name of the show offhand, but the one from the mid-80’s with the giant puppets that spewed wonderfully vicious political venom. I caught a few episodes when I was travelling in England in 86. I don’t think it ever made it in America – many of the politicos skewered on the show were British, so it would have sailed over the heads of Americans.

I believe I may have only seen about 5:

Black Adder

Are You Being Served

Last of the Summer Wine

Waiting For God

As Time Goes By (not because it is hysterically funny, but because it is so well done)

I have seen one or two others and Red Dwarf probably belongs on this list, but I’ve only seen 1 season of it. I have seen nearly all or at least a substantial portion of those listed.

The Office
Spaced
Blackadder
The Royle Family
(tie) The Young Ones/Bottom

Honorable mention to Python, Jeeves & Wooster, and Little Britain - not quite sitcoms.

Blackadder
Black Books
Father Ted
The Office
Fawlty Towers or AbFab, not sure.

I leave off Monty Python ONLY because people are saying that as a sketch show it doesn’t count. Otherwise it’d be in there right after Blackadder.

Have to mention the immortal Python, even though I’m not sure it is eligible.

Does “Brit-com” require they be sit-coms?

Anyways,

Sitcom?

(1) Fawlty Towers

(2) Are You Being Served

(3) Chef

(4) To the Manor Born

(5) The Good Life (Good Neighbors)

Sixth would be Vicar of Dibley
