there are others…
In My Life by The Beatles
Alone Again Naturally by Gilbert O’Sullivan
A little obscure - Independence Day, Larry Crane Band
A little cheesy but Look Away by Chicago.
It was a hit just as I got dumped for the first time.
Time for Me to Fly - REO Speedwagon
Bob Mould - “Can’t Fight It”
REM - “The One I Love”
I Don’t Believe in Love by Queensryche.
“Knowing Me, Knowing You” by ABBA for the “irreconcilable differences” sort of breakup
“Hope You Never” by Tom Petty for the “that bastard!” sort of breakup
(key lyric: “hope you never fall in love with… somebody like you”)
I’ve been in quite a few realtionships. Most of them have been mutual amicable breakups.
But once I was dropped like a hot potato after a couple of years together. And the the song “Just When I Needed You Most” by Randy Vanwarmer was a big hit.
And as corney as that song is, I’d get sad everytime I heard it. In fact it was playing at the grocery store a few months ago, and I thought that guy.
When I’m not too sad over a breakup, “It’s All Over Now” by the Rolling Stones, “Gone, Gone, Gone” by Bad Company, and “Love So Right” by the Bee Gees sound good under the circumstances.
One more. When you both know it’s over, but can’t quite get around to facing up to it, “Neither One of Us Wants To Be The First to Say Goodbye” by Gladys Knight and the Pips, sums it all up
“Idiot Wind” by Bob Dylan.
At various times, it’s been:
“Angie” by The Rolling Stones
“Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” by Bob Dylan
“Never Had No One” by The Smiths
“You Were Meant For Me” by Jewel (who I hate, but that song was just on at the right time once and it got ugly)
“Blood Roses” Tori Amos
“Hey Ya” by Outkast
I guess it all depends on the nature of the break up and how you feel afterwards. Clearly this list spans decades, and is a sad commentary on my love life…
6’1" by Liz Phair is very cathartic to sing at the top of your lungs after you just had a stupid conversation with your ex, I’ve found.
Ooooooh, yeah, that reminds me, another of my favourite breakup songs… well, just before I left the abusive guy, still feeling like I was in love with him, I listened to “I Know It’s Over” a lot. But you know, when he gets to the “Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head” part it, it felt kind of liberating, somehow. I don’t know why. Sometimes I sing it to myself (or in the tub) even today, and by the time I get to that part I cry a little. I can’t help it. But I’m happy. And I’m glad it’s over. It just feels really, really good.
I know it’s over, still I cling
I don’t know where else I can go
Over, over, over, over, over over over…
The sadistic part of me wants to say: “Weird Al” Yankovic: I Was Only Kidding
I could tell it when i woke up this mornin’
‘cause i can smell it when a heartache’s comin’
Not that i’m in such a hurry to lose you
I’d call you up but there’s nothin’ that i can do
Talkin’ won’t do any good anyway
'cause goodbye’s all we’ve got left to say
by Steve Earle
Me too.
“Your Dictionary” by XTC when feeling bitter.
“Days” by The Kinks when feeling grateful for the good parts (while they lasted).
Missing Person, The Kinks
Civilized Man, Joe Cocker
Oddly enough all day long I’ve been earwormed with *Why Don’t You Get A Job, * Offspring
“Further On Up The Road”, Eric Clapton live version from E.C. Was Here.
