Whoa!! Yeah, I have 11. I have no idea why I have eleven but I’m sure glad I don’t have 42!
I wasn’t suggesting that you create a message board in a subreddit. I was suggesting that if you wanted to read some people’s opinions (as you mentioned upthread), you could follow them and read their opinions.
Thanks. Yup, I can see it from that view.
Stalkers! j/k I follow a couple people who post interesting studies.
It’s not going to be like the SDMB because it doesn’t have a two decade history and the format generally isn’t a geared towards that but it certainly exists on reddit. There are countless invitation only subs out there. I’m fairly prolific on reddit and I have been invited to a few of them. One has a few hundred active members from all over the world. It’s much like the Dope in that all subjects from politics to personal life stories to advice on what modem to buy and so on are discussed. Like the Dope it leans left politically. One member is going through cancer treatments and we had a big fundraiser for her. In fact, there is one other Doper in there besides me.
Some of the more popular redditors have personal subreddits, some private, that have good discussions. The few that I am in are more MPSIMS like.
You also don’t have to be prolific on Reddit to get invited to a sub. I got invited to one privately yesterday because I showed interest in the topic. It wasn’t a broad based sub like hajario is talking about, just a regular sub that just started.
I don’t want to follow a lot of different people individually. I want to follow a community.
All I can say is that the survivors of the snopes boards tried to pull that off and failed; in large part, IMO, because the format of reddit made it very difficult to keep track of multiple such discussions. As you say, that’s not what it’s geared to.
If that group of us couldn’t pull it off, I very much doubt I could do it on my own. Somebody with more time to put into the effort and more interest in trying to wrestle Reddit into allowing accomplishing it’s not designed to do might be able to get it to work.
I agree. In my experience most of them fizzle to be honest. It’s by chance which ones take off.
All my other MBs are dead…
I miss the witty intellectual approach of many people on the comic book forums at NextPlanetOver dot com (BaldGuy, where you at now?).
And they killed the forums at DealMac dot com (“How To Go Broke Saving Money”)… but many of those folk at now at the MacResource dot net forum.
It’s really difficult to get people to change platforms successfully because people are expecting the new place to work exactly like the old one. Snopes was a really different platform than Reddit. It would probably be easier to get a community of people together from within Reddit because they already know how the platform works.
Going back to the OP, this thread has reminded me of all the message boards I’ve joined over the years, probably over a couple dozen. Most of them were pretty small when I joined and are even smaller now but most of them are still going in one form or another. I’m reminded of Something Awful. I didn’t post there but it was pretty popular at one time.
stop by again: it’s a swell place and has excellent emojis
Too drunk/lazy to see if I linked this already:
Other Fucking Message Boards that Suck Major Ass! - The BBQ Pit - Straight Dope Message Board
I probably shouldn’t have linked that in this forum. Mod can delete if they see fit. We was a lot more fun back then.
I go back for an occasional dose of Jeffrey MacDonald (guilty as hell) and Knox trials and appeals (I’d disagree with @GreenWyvern but this is not the place and I don’t really have any investment in it. )
I’ve tried to link a thread comparing Big Foot and bears, but my browsers won’t have it.
On the Knox case, I suggest you read this summary of the evidence and/or watch this BBC documentary.
What you may not know about the reason Sollecito and Knox were acquitted, is that Sollecito’s family is 'Ndrangheta. This is not a theory. His father is a medical doctor known as ‘the doctor to the Dons’. His first cousin was arrested in an 'Ndrangheta drug operation in Canada.
The 'Ndrangheta is like the Mafia, only more secretive, more intelligent, far wealthier and more efficient… and more feared. They are known for having high level connections among the judiciary, police, and politicians.
Nothing can be proved… but judges were swopped at the last minute for no obvious reason, and some of the motivations reports by the judges really didn’t add up. (I’ve read them.)
In case I wasn’t clear:
Only enough to say that you disagreed with me.
It requires no effort on my part to disagree when you are WRONG!
We only have garden variety Mafiosi around here, so my wife worked in the Blood Bank of the Mob. She grew tired of doctors dumping all her plasma into Tony Accardo in an effort to delay his passage to Hell so when the requests stopped she went looking for him. The ICU nurses had stuck him in a corner while he cooled off.
But enough of that hijack! A fun site and board is Casebook: Jack the Ripper - Introduction to the Case.

I’m not really invested in Jack the Ripper.
So you understand.
Sure… but whatever your opinion is about Jack the Ripper, you are WRONG!
