Regardless of whether it was mostly in the 80s or 90s, was *The Wonder Years *even considered a sitcom? I thought of it as more of a drama.
ALF was my favorite show at the time, as I was a little kid in the '80s, but I tried watching a couple of episodes a few years back and it just doesn’t hold up very well. Yeah, there are some jokes aimed toward the adults, but they’re pretty corny, and most of the rest of the humor doesn’t really do much if you’re older than 12.
So out of that list I picked out Cheers and Night Court as my two favorite sitcoms.
Damn you Tim R. Mortiss!!!::shakes fist:: that’s what i was gonna say!! ![]()
‘as god is my witness, i thought turkeys could fly!’
as funny now as it was then.
/shaking my fist at myself for missing Kate & Allie.
The one “embarrassing” vote I cast was for “Perfect Strangers”, which I loved at the time but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t be able to sit through a minute of now.
I don’t know that many people considered it a sitcom become back then, simply because it deviated so much from what the format was like in that era - it wasn’t a three-camera show filmed on a three wall set in front of a live studio audience. Though it was only a half-hour long and had a lot of humor, it did have the look and feel of a drama. Still calling it a sitcom probably wouldn’t be out of line.
You have to remember, though, it’s only been in recent years that the laughtrack-less Office, Modern Family, Community-type sitcoms have really taken off on American TV. Up until about 10 years ago it would have been nearly unthinkable to do that type of show and call it a sitcom. Which is why there is some confusion as what to call The Wonder Years.
Night Court and Cheers. They’re about as timeless as it’s possible to get for sitcoms.
