Your favorite drug store makeup

I see several threads with makeup recommendations and tips (which I will dive into), but none specifically about drug store makeup. I’ve taken an interest in painting my face lately, but am on a tight budget, so CVS and Rite Aid have been getting my limited cosmetics dollars.

I am lucky enough to have a job where I can show up in no makeup (although I don’t leave the house without filling in my brows, even if it’s to walk the dogs) or a face full of it and no one really cares. I try to pretty up for nights out and special occasions though, and since I don’t really know what I’m doing (which is why I will be reading through those tip threads tonight) it’s not always a successful effort.

Right now I’m loving NYX products (CVS), especially their jumbo eye pencils and Pin-Up mascara. They have some great lipsticks, too. I looooove a whacky lip shade, and have amassed a good collection of bright reds, pinks, and oranges. My sister has a tube of awesome ice blue that I’m going to nab, but it’s from Sephora so it will be a splurge.

So tell me about your favorite cheap products! And/or tell me what I can’t skimp on. I don’t wear foundation or blush (have never been able to apply either in a way that doesn’t look like a mask), but share those too in case someone else is looking!

Brush and other accessory suggestions are welcome, too. I have an old, cheap set of brushes that I don’t really know how to use, most of my makeup goes on with fingers or Qtips :o

I gather from watching some tutorials that a good set of brushes helps tremendously, but do I really have to pay $80 for them?

Buy brushes at Target from the e.l.f. cosmetic line. They are incredibly inexpensive (like under $5) and quite good. I like their makeup, too.

Loreal has this mascara that is 2 part, called Double Extend. It’s the best I’ve ever used, by a lot. I’m not much of a makeup girl, but I love that mascara.

Oh wow, I forgot about ELF! I bought some good blotting sheets from them at some point and when I ran out the brand slipped my mind. I’ll have to look for their brushes the next time I’m at Target.

Mascara is hard for me, I want long dark lashes but I’m so pale that when I use black it looks startling. But the brown just isn’t dramatic enough. So I wear black, pile it on, and embrace the drag.

I think it’s sad that in this day and age, women still feel the need or social pressure to slather all these chemicals on their faces to look artificially pretty or acceptable. Just IMHO.

L’Oreal’sMagic Skin Beautifier BB Cream is the best I’ve found for my skin. I get it at Walmart for around $8 a tube.

I usually get all my makeup from Sephora or department store cosmetic counters, but that BB Cream beats all others for me, hands down.

Ooooh, chemicals. So terrible. Guess I should skip the acne cream, too. And soap. :dubious:

Back to the subject. (And, long post! Hope something’s useful to someone else, I didn’t realize I’d do such a long brain-splat, but here you go.)

I use Physician’s Formula Mineral Wear loose powder as a foundation and concealer. I tossed the brush and use a cosmetic sponge to apply, and to cover spots I use my finger dabbed in the powder and blended out. Very effective, and nice on my super oily skin. I actually get some clearing of acne if I wear the powder regularly.

I’m not sold on using brushes. I can’t be bothered to clean the damn things. So I stick with cosmetic sponges, larger rounds, smaller rounds, and triangles. Maybe they take some practice? I’ve been using them so long I’m used to them and I think they’re great for blending and when they get too loaded with product/oil, I just toss them and get another one out of the $1/dozen package. I also use fingers and q-tips when they’re called for, which seems to be about as often as those who use brushes in the YouTube how-to videos I’ve watched.

I go through an occasional tear with makeup, funny mine has been over the last month, too. I’ve bought more makeup in the last 30 days than I have in the last 5 years. I have a new pair of rimless, anti-reflective glasses and can see my face so much better, I wake up and find myself saying, “ugh, need eyeliner.” And then find myself saying, “hm, would look more finished with some lip color.” And next thing I know, I’m filling in eyebrows and applying concealer before I feel like things are consistent enough looking to go out the door.

I’m also loving NYX for eye stuff. Haven’t ventured into the rest of the face, except for a finishing spray that does seem to keep things in place longer, my foundation doesn’t transfer as easily when I blot, for instance. I won’t use it every day, but for a night out, for sure.

I dislike lip colors that transfer, though. I really prefer the Maybelline Super Stay 24 and Cover Girl Outlast. Some people find them drying, and I do need to re-apply the balm, I’ve also found a silicone-based gloss works well and lasts a little longer than the balm that comes with the lip colors. But the trade-off? So worth it! Stays on through entire meals (unless oily, even salad dressing can be a no-no) and drinking and kissing. I take it off with coconut oil at the end of the day (eye makeup, too).

I’ve really found watching YouTube tutorials helpful lately, just to get the gist of what the kids are doing these days!

Also, since one drawback of drug store buying is more difficult returns and inability to swatch stuff before purchase, I’ve learned to have a little patience. I find colors I think I like and then Google the name of the color with “review” or “swatch” and everything I’ve searched for has a blog or video or just pics in the image search that are really helpful for me to figure out if it’s a color I really like or whether it will look good on me if the person reviewing has a similar skin tone. It’s been worth it since I love everything I’ve bought as a result.

All that said, I will say I took my first trip to Sephora a few weeks ago and didn’t regret it. Okay, maybe my pocketbook did, but I went in with a budget in mind and stuck to it. My friend I was with and I both did a brief (free) consult with one of the makeup artists and we both benefited (me, for a nude waterline liner, her for eyebrows that aren’t the same since growing back from chemo). I also asked one of the associates about a specific lippy I was looking for (which I was not finding on my own) and she ran around the store to swatch four different ones. I wanted a very dark, vampy red that doesn’t transfer (as mentioned above) and I wasn’t finding in the drug store lines. One was absolutely perfect, and I never would have looked at it between the color it looked like in the tube (brown) and the color as described on the display (raspberry). But, it’s perfect. Make Up For Ever Aqua Rouge in #11, it was $25 and worth every penny! But still, won’t be replacing it right away once I use it up. Got some nice free samples and a belated birthday gift at checkout, too.

Those remove dirt or are medications. You don’t see the difference between those and pore-clogging, colored chemicals applied solely for vanity’s sake?

Mineral based, powder/liquid makeup, noncomedogenic, often vegan, and because we (many women and some men) like it. No.

Now stop threadshitting. Start your own thread about some specific ingredient, and go arm wave about “chemicals” somewhere else.

I only use Trish McEvoy makeup, so that’s the opposite of drugstore, but here are my exceptions:

Lipstick: I lose lipsticks all the time, so here I economize. I have the best luck with Wet n Wild lipstick. This is my current favorite. It was two bucks at the drugstore, with buy one get one free, so it cost me a dollar. Love it.

Mascara: Maybelline Full and Softin black. Strangely, the non-waterproof stays on me better than the waterproof. I like it as well as the Trish mascara, and I save 25 bucks a pop. This makes it a lot less painful to follow the guideline about replacing your mascara frequently.

Brushes: Eco Tools brushes are AWESOME!! I have this set. It’s only $12.99 for the 5 and the powder brush is super-soft.

I also like cheap “taklon” paint brushes from the craft store. I use them as lip brushes, and used to use one as a flat eyeliner brush before I got my lovely #11 eyeliner brush. I’ve used other paint brushes as makeup brushes as well. Look for sales and/or the weekly 40% off coupon.

And since you don’t wear foundation, look for a powder/foundation combo. It will give you a little more coverage than just powder, but won’t suffocate your face or look mask-like. It’s also way easier to apply than liquid foundation, especially if you’re not looking for significant coverage. Just swipe the brush around on it and dust it all over your face.

This is not the thread for that opinion, however…so feel free to make your own instead and don’t hijack this one with a debate about this.

I appreciate the help, but please try to just “report post” to minimize further possible hijacking.

Very useful, thank you!

Do you use sponges for eyeshadow, too? When I wear it I just use the crummy applicator that comes with it but I’ve been watching tutorials on YouTube and want to try layering and blending and that seems to require a few different sizes of brushes. How do you apply to small areas like the crease of your eyelid with a sponge?

I have a super short (like close to a buzz cut short) hair cut now after a few years of very long hair so I feel like my face is “on display” in a way it wasn’t before :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes! I love this stuff! Even though I don’t wear foundation I spritz it on after I powder and it sets my eye makeup and even lip color SO WELL. I went out dancing and went to bed with my makeup on and this stuff set it so well that it still looked good the next morning!

I hate that, too. I like dramatic lipstick and it stinks when it rubs off after an hour. The “super stay” stuff is drying to me, and when I apply chapstick first it makes it too slidey.

Any suggestions? I’ve been watching this girland while she wears more makeup (and fake lashes, I am intrigued but scared) than I would on a regular day I like her style and color combos.

Love the tip about using artist’s brushes, I get craft store coupons all the time, I need to head up there and browse!

Can I use a powder/foundation to touch up shine throughout the day or is it going to build up and look cakey? I’m oily (honestly I think it has to do with how much coffee I drink, is that possible?) so I hit my face with some pressed powder a few times a day to take the shine off. I used to use blotting paper but it got to be a pain, and kind of gross, carrying around a pocketful of the used sheets.

I like the Physician’s Formula BB cream. My cheeks and nose are reddish and blotchy, but I blend in a little bit of this with my fingers and you can’t tell I’m even wearing makeup, it just looks much more even.

I love Hard Candy’s make up primer. It’s maybe $5 at Walmart. It makes your skin like velvet.

I love loreal mascara and cover girl foundation :))))

Another vote for Maybelline Full and Soft. They used to make a brownish black but stopped. shakes fist

I only buy the cheapie brand pencil eyeliners; there seems to be no difference between those and more expensive brands.

I love Revlon’s Color Stay powder. It has enough pigment that on weekends, I only wear it, no foundation.

I only wear foundation around my eyes (I use it instead of cover stick, which I don’t like), and use Neutrogena Healthy Skin.

Blush is either an NYC in Big Apple (it’s not red, it’s a nice brownish pink), or a powdered one by Physicians Formula. I only wear it when I feel that I look pale.

Edit: I use makeup sponges to blend things in, and at the end I dampen the sponge, and press down on my face to make things settle in.

I doubt it would build up and seem cakey, especially if you just brush on a light coat.

Trish McEvoy used to make the most fantastic shine-reducing goo. I’d put it on in the morning and I was good for most of the day. I use this Clean & Clear stuff now. It works pretty well. I put it on in the morning before any makeup or anything.

Cover Girl LashBlast mascara is the best mascara I have ever used… and I have tried every mascara sampler I was ever given. Something about that silicone brush is just really special.

I usually get the orange tube, but the red one is good too.
