Your favorite drummers

Put me down for Abe Laborial Jr. Probably best known for touring with Paul McCartney he can most likely not do Portnoy but he oozes feel and personality and is great to watch.

…oh, and Chester Thompson.

I like Terry Bozzio. But my God thats a lotta drums.

Rich verses Roach, Mercury/Polygram 826 987-2

My list, no particular order:

Neal Peart
Terry Bozzio
Tony Thompson
Rick Allen, for sheer balls and doing a damn fine job without a bunch of electronic stuff these days.
Roger Taylor

I’ve heard Terry Bozzio talk about his first audition with Zappa. He’d watched several superb drummers struggle with the sight reading test Zappa was giving, and figured there was no way he could handle it. He asked some of the other guys waiting to audition if they’d heard anything about tryouts for the Weather Report… which made the other guys chuckle, because they all knew something Bozzio didn’t: that the whole reason Zappa was holding tryouts was that HIS old drummer, Chester Thompson, had just quit to take the Weather Report gig

When Bozzio got his turn to audition, he struggled with everything he was asked to do, and was sure he’d flunked. To his surprise, Zappa said, “Not bad. Stick around. I’ll want to hear you again after the other guys have finished.”

They looked around and saw that all the other guys had given up and left.

“Okay,” said Zappa. “I guess the job’s yours if you want it.”

Dangit, I missed the edit window…it’s NEIL Peart. Gaaah.

Lot of great drummers mentioned here.

Want to mention two I don’t think have been posted here.

Dave Clark - even just for Glad All Over

and

DJ Fontana (Elvis’ drummer) - Heartbreak Hotel, Jailhouse Rock, Hound Dog etc

Oooooo! Is it a drum wankfest or does it stand up musically??

Thanks!

Wankfest – but one hell of a good wankfest. Since they alternate using the same songs (some of which do stand up musically), it’s a terrific way to compare and contrast them.

Steve Gadd also gets a lifetime pass for his work with Steely Dan. He’s just wonderful.

Ah - like One Night in SF the McLaughlin, DiMeola and de Lucia guitar wankfest. I will have to check it out. Cool!

I second:

Tony Williams
Elvin Jones

Also:
Philly Joe Jones
Jimmy Cobb
Eric Harland

Zigaboo!!

Ha Ha! Yes, that is better.

I’d also like to throw in some props for Mick Fleetwood. Take him out of the Fleetwood Mac equation and it’s simply not the same band. Very distinct sound. I also liked him in some of the Bluesbreakers stuff I’ve heard him on.

Actually, Jaime was the original Flower Kings drummer, and Zoltan replaced him. Zoltan has also played with The Tangent, as has Jaime subsequently.

Video starts with Zoltan

I’d like to add Nick D’Virgilio from Spock’s Beard and Jimmy Keegan, their tour drummer.

I did know that, but my post was already getting a little long. And we’re both ignoring Hasse Bruniusson.

Thanks for posting those links. I have been liking Spock’s Beard for a while* but have never seen them play, not even a video. I didn’t know Nick sang or that they toured with another drummer. They are both MONSTERS!

*SB lead me to Transatlantic which led me to Flower Kings which led to Tangent. I had given up on prog since it seemed to go away in the 70’s. I’m still catching up.

Since I have the internal rhythm of an epileptic chimpanzee being electrocuted by ever changing AC, I have to ask those of you who can get your hands to even clap at the same beat:

Whenever I hear these conversations, no one mentions Graham Edge of the Moody Blues. Is this out of people don’t know him or don’t think he’s that great. Like I mentioned earlier, I couldn’t tell a beatnik from a beat-down, so I’m not the best judge, but I always liked Graham’s stuff.

I like Will Rigby (dB’s, and sessioner with many bands including They Might Be Giants). Just really inventive.

No love for Mick Avery (Kinks)? Yeah, me neither.
