Your Favorite Pink Floyd CD? (post R. Waters)

Just wondering: Would some SDopers care to recommend their favorite Pink FLoyd album after Roger Waters left the group. Is “The Division Bell” worthwhile? What about “The Delicate Sound of Thunder” (or is this a Best of?) Thanks, Jinx

What else did they do since “Momentary Lapse of Reason”?

“Division Bell” is a great studio album. “Delicate Sound of Thunder” is a so-so live album. If you’re looking to go live, I’d suggest Pulse. Awesome album in my opinion.

Though none of the post-Waters Pink Floyd albums are as good as the classic Floyd albums of the 70s, “The Division Bell” was very good, and even “Momentary Lapse of Reason” was okay. At the very least, it’s a lot better than “The Final Cut” or any of the crud Waters has put out since dissolving the band.

Astorian has the right idea. The Division Bell is worthwhile, even though it’s heavy on guitar solos and similarly arranged songs. To its benefit, Gilmour is a great guitarist and the songs, except for “Keep Talking” and “Lost For Words,” are good.

Delicate Sound of Thunder is rubbish. Get Pulse instead if you want a live album. And Momentary Lapse of Reason is half good.

In descending order of necessity:

Division Bell is a very, very good album. Its couple of missteps (“Wearing the Inside Out” and “A Great Day for Freedom”) are more than made up for by the excellence of everything else, and “Poles Apart” kills me (and hopefully also Roger Waters).

Pulse is a damn good live album. The mix of material is pretty good, the band sounds like they’re paying attention and having fun, and the sound quality is great.

Momentary Lapse of Reason is pretty good. It suffers from a bit of 80s synthesizer disease and a lot of the lyrics are transparent pandering (“On the Turning Away” and the crapfest “Dogs of War”), but Gilmour’s playing sounds rejuvenated and much of the material is very, very good. “Sorrow” and “Yet Another Movie” are just damn fine Floyd songs, in my opinion.

Delicate Sound of Thunder is the kind of pointless live album the Rolling Stones keep releasing. Adjectives that come to mind include muddled and perfunctory.

And supposedly, there’s another Floyd album done, it’s just waiting on Gilmour to get around to put the final touches on it. However, he’s stated in at least one interview that he’ll probably not do it, since he’s got other things occupying his time. (What, I don’t know.)

I’d like to see a cite on that one.

It was an interview with Gilmour in a music magazine some months ago. Sorry I don’t remember which one or what issue it was. I didn’t buy it, simply read it in Tower.

Meddle” has always been my favorite.

A few months back, he was saying that he was mostly done with a solo album (Described as rather quieter than a PF album). I’ve heard no indication that he’s working on anything with Nick Mason and/or Rick Wright.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love another Gilmour-Mason-Wright album, under whatever monicker they care to give it. It’s just that everything I’ve seen is that there won’t be one. :frowning:

It may have been that. I just remember getting pissed off by Gilmour’s “Yeah, I should probably do something about that, but I’m too busy counting my money at the moment” attitude.

If he does put out another solo album, I hope it’s as good as his first one. (The second’s a good one, but not nearly as strong as the first, IMHO.)

Meddle was with Roger Waters, not without.

Ah yes. I didn’t read that part of the OP. I wondered why all the albums I saw posted were on my “inferior PF album” list.
