Your insomniac/bored/anxious Youtube video choices

There are several channels that livestream waterholes in Africa, but there’s never much going on when I tune in.

Yeah, on the rare occasions I need help sleeping, I like repair videos that combine craftsmanship with ASMR aspects. The “Vetiver’s Lab” shoe and leather repair videos out of South Korea deliver a practically chemical hit of relaxation. They’re interesting to watch when I’m awake too, but if I’m a little tired it’s just zzzzzz.

Something I forgot about is that they film this show in different countries with different hosts, but it’s exactly the same. It’s like the first time you found out Progressive has an Australian Flo (Kitty).

I didn’t realize it until now, but apparently there was an American version as well, with Reggie Watts and Alex Horne.

Also, since I’m on the topic, it took me way too long to realize this guy from Taskmaster

is also this guy from Cats Does Countdown

Yes, on Comedy Central. Didn’t last more than one season, though. The network cut it down to thirty minute episodes (21 minutes actual runtime), which meant they eliminated the prize tasks and all the team tasks.

Plus Reggie Watts didn’t make a great Taskmaster and the contestants weren’t that great.

I don’t think we have enough prominent American comics who have the self-deprecation and willingness to embrace the absurdity required for a show like Taskmaster. Bill Engvall or Jeff Foxworthy, maybe. Amy Shumer would be willing to make herself look ridiculous, I think, and Sarah Silverman would dive in headfirst, I suspect. But Lisa Lamparelli? Bill Burr? Can’t see it.

Incidentally, per @Joey_P’s suggestion, I’ve started a Taskmaster thread over in Cafe Society, so we can stop hijacking this one. I don’t know how to link threads, so if someone can clue me in, I’ll link it to this one.

I haven’t watched nearly of them for my taste, but I’ve stumbled across the Sleepcore videos from picsandportarits. It’s basically a super cut of old clips of futurism ranging from the beginning of moving pictures with sound to around 20 years ago. I haven’t found one I don’t like yet.

Omg he would get so mad. I want to see it.

I have discovered Big Joel.

I started here. I could watch his pop culture takes all day long. So funny and insightful and…odd.

Yet another Taskmaster fan here.

I submit Julian Baumgartner’s art restoration channel. I love watching the painting come back to life.

How do you embed video clips?

StG

That’s one of my 'I have an hour to kill at work" channels.

I also like Great Art Explained. They don’t put out too much content, but I really like it. Both their short and long videos are all easily digestible for people like me that have no real knowledge of art.

No real insomnia/boredom/anxiety here, just a dumb video I made a couple days ago that I figured I’d plop down here, about my dorky regression back into car modelling again.
Got a half hour to waste?

A relative of mine raced funny cars.

More cerebral than most YouTube videos but there’s an American geology professor that live streamed his geology 101 lectures during lockdown and the channel took off, so he now does online lectures about geology. But I watched the whole original lecture series and it’s pitched at a nice level, plus he’s a great teacher and the geology of his state of Washington is some of the most interesting on Earth:

Another good YouTuber is Tom Scott, who does relatively short explanation videos of interesting things in a really professional way:

And you can go a step up from that with Matt Parker.

If you like current events regarding NASA stuff Scott Manley makes good/quick videos.

Physics Girl is great for physics (often astro physics) videos that are both in depth and geared towards people that have just a cursory understanding of what she’s talking about. She’s good about slowing down to make sure a concept is understood well enough to be used as a jumping off point to get to the next concept. I do like how she bounces things off her camera operator (?) to get a feel for how much more/less a topic needs to be explained.

Along those same lines is Veratasium. Different style, same idea. In fact, they’ve done a few videos together. Come to think of it, they did a video on UV light and it’s how I learned that fake teeth (like crowns) don’t glow under a black light.

And, I see we haven’t talked about Smarter Every Day yet. For anyone that hasn’t seen it, he’s up there with some of the best science youtubes out there. Anyone that likes Mark Rober will probably like Destin (Smarter Every Day) as well.
For anyone not familiar with him, I encourage you to watch his videos. They cover everything from shaking walnuts off a tree to actual rocket science. Here’s a great video that I find myself watching once or twice a year.

Another one. Mike Boyd. He’ll pick a skill he doesn’t have and time how long it takes to learn it. It’s interesting to watch someone struggling and pushing even harder until he gets it.

Can you tell me how you embed a video like this? Thx!

Copy the youtube URL and paste it here. As long as it’s on it’s own line, it’ll appear like that.

Thanks, Great Art Explained sounds right up my alley.
