Your latest retro music discoveries

I have discovered it, believe me. Whoever called it the “greatest record ever made” just might be right. I don’t know much about jazz (although I will learn more now), but holy shit, those two are amazing.

I’ve mentioned them before, but I will again : Cruella DeVille.

I hadn’t discovered Leonard Cohen until just a few months ago…

Have you any other deep interest? Put 'em aside, because this is going to require all of the rest of your life. Jazz is that deep, rich and diverse.

It’s why I stopped listening to new jazz. As I said upthread about record collecting, it was sucking away my life.

Anne Heart is awesome but I discovered her over a month ago. Having been in a “discovering” kind of mood lately though.

Jeff, thanks for the Sita Sings the Blues recommendation, will check it out beyond my slow ass dial-up. Looks great.

Beware of Doug, an apt definition of 78 collectors. Do you know of Marshall Wyatt’s Old Hat Records? If ya like the old 78 stuff, his compilations do the work— impeccably put together with great liner notes and photos; let Marshall do the crazy search/collection for ya!

I’m on an Al Green rennaissance jag right now. Hot Grits and good soul.

The Bee Gees’ '60’s material. Before they became a disco hit factory, they were a soft-pop hit factory.

Also, Elton John’s 1975 hit “Island Girl,” which I caught halfway through on an oldies or classic rock (or whatever the NYC CBS Radio network music programmer calls it) station about a month ago. Damn, what a perfect pop song that is! I bet I hadn’t heard it in twenty years, but that’s my loss 'cause it’s a masterpiece – an uptempo song with a propulsively bouncy rhythm, inventive instrumentation, a great bassline – I need to get more Elton John in my music collection.

I would also like to give a shout out to Helen Humes and Nellie Lutcher, a couple of old time shouters that are a lot of fun. Nellie’s rendition of “Hurry On Down” puts Bette Middler to shame.
