Yep, those are the scenes that did it for me - especially the last one. And the one where Anakin talks creepily about sand. And the one where Anakin creepily talks about killing all them Sand People. And the one where Anakin creepily bitches about Obi-Wan. And the one where Anakin creepily… oh, you get the point.
i disagree. it’s a close tie between phantom menace and attack of the clones for my least favorite, but darth maul is awesome, and the three way lightsaber duel between him, obi-wan and qui-gon is great.
Darth Maul isn’t a character. He doesn’t even have any lines: He just growls a bit and attacks Jedi.
Anyway, I’d say that while all of the prequel movies were flawed, they were definitely learning from their mistakes as they went on. Which leaves Phantom as the worst.
The Phantom Menace has a lot of problems, but they could mostly be redeemed by tighter editing: in particular, severely shortening the pod race, and (of course) removing Jar Jar entirely. It’s got some good actions scenes, Ewan MacGregor and Liam Neeson both put in strong performances, and nothing that happens in that movie necessarily damages the original trilogy. It’s a mediocre film that suffered badly from exceptionally high expectations.
Attack of the Clones is irredeemable. The strongest actor in the trilogy was killed off in the first film, and while MacGregor still does a good job, he’s not enough to carry it. Hayden Christensen starts the work of entirely destroying the menace and mystique of Darth Vader, in a way Jake Lloyd never could. Even on its own merits, the focus on the relationship between Anakin and Padme simply doesn’t work. There’s absolutely no chemistry between them. And the action sequences are just lame. AotC is really just an incredibly bad movie all around.
Yeah. “The Phantom Edit” showed that, underneath the missteps, there was a reasonably solid (well, acceptably mediocre) film lurking within TPM. No amount of editing could salvage AOTC or ROTS - the shit is just too integral to the plot in those movies.
It was tough to choose, but I had to go with Revenge of the Sith. The fall of Anakin Skywalker was just done so horribly that it made the film irredeemable. Hayden Christensen was bad enough, especially on top of Lucas’ ham-handed writing and directing. I have to always put that movie out of my mind when watching the original trilogy, because Darth Vader should not be a comic character (and I wish I could re-insert Sebastian Shaw* back into my DVD. This is one VHS that I will forever keep).
*We comic geeks (my friends and I) got the biggest kick out of that name when we first noticed it.
I haven’t voted yet, because I don’t remember the name of the one that had the cartoons battling the toys. Also, I haven’t seen all of them. I saw the original and thought it was okay as that sort of movie goes, but I was not, and am not, a fan of the subgenre. I preferred the Star Trek movies and Alien and its sequels.
Whichever one had Jarjar Binks (unless that’s the same one as the one I already mentioned) would be second least favorite.
If I knew the names, I’d vote, but I hate to go searching IMDb for that.
I hated the compression of history of the whole prequel set. The whole big bad Empire is only one short generation old? Pffft. The original movie implied an epic backstory.
This, He goes too quickly from reluctantly accepting Palpantine’s tutledge to casually slaughtering children who look up to him.
Return of the Jedi was a hodgepog of different scenes that didn’t mesh well together and the ewoks were just terrible. It had some quoteunquote cool things but they were just a rehash of A new hope and ESB.
I really don’t understand why the Phantom menace gets so much hate, I think it was the second best of them after ESB.
If you truly don’t but would care to find out, you need to watch the Mr. Plinkett Episode I review on YouTube. Behind all the questionable humor is one of the greatest analyses of filmmaking I know.
AoTC was badly edited. In TPM they kept in a lot of the stuff that should have been left out. In AoTC they did the opposite, left out too much. There are deleted scenes with Anakin and Amidala at the latter house and if they had been left in; it could have been a better movie; at least you had a better reason then for “romance” the rolling in hay. AoTC did have the battle scene.
Okay, I’ll check the review out. I haven’t seen the deleted scenes of AoTCs, what I do know however, is it’ll be a lot better if they took the factory scene out. It seems the only purpose it served was to sell videogames.
