What do you think (if you remember) of the group. bad finger??:smack:
They were good in The Magic Christian.
Much of their work was outstanding, especially the stuff produced by Todd Rundgren. But pretty much any critique of them (positive or negative) is colored by the band’s horrible demise.
Fantastic stuff. Don’t know the story of the band (like I have no idea what their horrible demise is), but juicy power pop.
Two horrible demises.
I think of them as the evolutionary link between the Beatles and Wings; even more so than McCartney’s solo work in 1970.
I love them. They’re power pop nobility with an interesting (the Beatles and Apple connection), but utter tragic history. They were scammed hard by their manager which led to the end of the group and maybe two suicides.
Damn. Looks like I gots some reading to do tonight.
When I saw the thread title I said “brilliant music, tragic story.”
Sounds like I’m in the majority here.
I think that one suicide is considered a pretty settled question. I was just listening this morning and happened to review their story on wiki, it’s worth noting that some of their recorded work in the early 70’s was put out in haste, under pressure, and may suffer for it.
Some people well and truly suck.
reads up on it Damn. Special circle of hell for people like Stan Polley, I hope.
Aye; that’s pretty much what I thought too.
I can remember my dad playing a Badfinger record frequently when I was a kid - in particular, Fool And His Money. And I remember enjoying it a lot. He explained to me the connection with the Beatles, which I could hear in the sound. Sometime recently, maybe last year, I was riding in the car with my dad and he played a CD that contained that song. Initially I felt a fond nostalgia for the song. Then after a little while I was like, “God, this song is repetitive. It’s the same lyrics and the same melody over and over again.” It’s very strange, it’s like it hit me at that very moment and I haven’t been able to really appreciate the song since. It’s like there’s just something missing, a bridge or a solo or a chord substitution that SHOULD have been placed somewhere, but wasn’t.
That’s only one song though. Baby Blue has stood the test of time.
You’re talking about “Come And Get It” a Paul McCartney song written and produced for Badfinger. Repetitive works for a movie soundtrack.
“Without You” an epic song, and epic recording by Harry Nilsson was originally a Badfinger song written by Pete Ham.
That song (“Come and Get it”) was originally intended for the Beatles’ Abbey Road; an album with a lot of brief fragmentary songs. It was then repurposed for the soundtrack to *The Magic Christian * as a linking devise between scenes, so it’s really more of a jingle than an actual song.
…AND Tom Evans!

I bought “No Dice” on CD decades ago. I always liked “No Matter”.
I always liked “Perfection”.
Great band. Love them. Criminally under-rated and such a sad history.
2 other thoughts: Hanging yourself would be a shit way to go, and I fucking hate it that Baby Blue was used in that piece of shit drug show. Fucking nearly ruins it.
