Your pets' names

How many pets do you have and what are their names? Do you have any knicknames for them? Do they actually respond to the knicknames??

I have 2 cats, Squeaky and Orion, and a dog, Jimmy. Squeaky responds to his name and his knicknames, maybe because they sound kind of like his name, or maybe he’s reading my body language (looking at him, maybe gesturing). His knicks include 'Queaky, Kwee-Kwee, Creaky, and Fluffy Britches (ok, he doens’t really respond to that one).

Orion is 'Rion (or Ryan) and “Rye Kitty.” He even has a song!

Rye Kitty, Rye Kitty,
Rye Kitty I cry!
If I don’t get Rye Kitty,
I surely will die!

You think that’s weird, Jimmy has a song, too.

Jimmy, the Jimmy-poo,
He loves me and I love you.

It’s a sickness. Anyway, Jimmy’s knicknames are Jimbo Jones, Jimmy-poo, and Puddy dog. I guess Jimmy is a knickname, too. My sister gave him to us and did us the favor of naming him for us. She got him from St. James church and dubbed him (duh) St. James. I wrinkled my nose and said, “A dog shouldn’t be called ‘saint’ unless he has a barrel of brandy around his neck.” So we called him Jimmy, but she still insists on calling him St. James or St. Puppy when she comes visit.

Anyway, that’s how I mess with my pets’ minds. What do you call your pets?

I have a Cocker Spaniel named Vincent. We call him Vinnie. He also gets called Vinnie-puppy, eventhough he is about 5 years old. He does not respond to much of any name, he does whatever he wants to.

He likes to curl up on the couch next to the window and sun himself. I have never had a cat, but he seems to do things that I associate more with a cat than a dog. He is odd, but he is ours.

We have two cats, Maria and Lucy. Like Gr8Kat’s cats, they have songs. We didn’t write the songs for them. Leonard Bernstein and John Lennon did. Well, not for them personally, but if they’d known them, I’m sure that they would have.

Therefore, I can say to guests, with a perfectly straight face, “You can sing to my cat if you like.” :stuck_out_tongue:

We have:

2.5 yo Lab, female, named Maksseen, called Mak.

2.5 yo Lab, female, named Shelby Mustang, called Shelby

4 month Lab, female, named Madison, called Maddie

4 month Lab, male, named Chance, also called big boy, fine boy, mama’s boy, etc. Man, I love this dog.

Just the male is really mine. It’s the only one I named. The rest belong to my husband and girls.

We also have a Quarter Horse named Chandler. He comes to any name if you have grain in your hand.

A miniature horse named Dixie. She follows you around like a puppy, so she doesn’t ever even get called.

Two geese, George and Gracie.

10 ducks, too many names to list.

OOhh, my favorite topic! I have 4 cats, a dog, and a gerbil that all have at least one name by which they are addressed.

First, the kitties:
Edie and Frances, my two 4 year old cats, both know their names, their long names (Edwina and Francesca), and their respective initials. Edie also responds to Edie Lamb and Miss Edie, and Frances to Francesca Lamb and Miss Frances.
Snuggles is about 2 years old. He responds to Snuggles, Snuggle Bear, Sugar, and Sugar Bear, and sometimes to ‘Shuggies’. He would be embarassed to know I told people that.
The wild baby cat, about a year old, doesn’t respond to anything but Baby Cat or Babykins, (and then only when he chooses to) so I guess one of those is his name.

The dog’s name is Hap, short for ‘Happy Not to Still be at the Pound’, and he is sometimes called Happy for long. He also responds to Puppy. (My mom has a cat named Puffy, so when we’re at her house he sometimes gets confused who we’re talking to - him or the cat.)

The Gerbil’s name is ND, which stands for Near Death. He came to be called that because I frequently come home to find him in some precarious situation outside his little gerbil-house. I call him that, but he doesn’t really respond in any way that is perceptible.

Two cats, Derwood and Kirby (as in Derwood Kirby). Derwood’s nickname is Mr. Derwood T. (for “the”) Cat, and Kirby also goes by Miss Kirby Lou (she’s the boss in our house and everybody knows it).

My cat’s name is Raven. She responds to anything that sounds close to that if the voice is pitched correctly.

I learned this because when I tried to show my brothers that she knew her name by saying “Raaaay-ven” and she meowed, my older brother leaned over my shoulder and said “eeeeeeggggg-plaaant”, and she meowed at him too.

I have 5 dogs, Mike, Simon (sometimes called SeaMonster, or Simple Simon or Fatty-boy), Kate (Little Dog my Frog don’t ask me why, Faith (called Red Dog sometimes) and Trick. My horse’s registered name is Donneybrook, his barn name is Irish and often I’ll just call him Lad, or Good Dog (I get confused sometimes). My cat’s name is Meg.

I have but one tuxedo cat, name of Enid. She was named after the virtuous maid in waiting in Tennyson’s “Idylls of the King.” Had I known her better, I’d have named her Vivien … Enid’s nicknames are The Nid, Niddy-Gritty-Kitty, Enid Oklahoma, Muffin, Bun, Catburger and lots more.

“Enid” is also a name a cat can say, or almost say. An acquaintance of mine in college asserted that all pets should have names they can say – you’d therefore name a dog something like “Darth” or “Alf,” while a cat might be “Murray” or “Raoul.” Not that I’ve ever had a pet want to introduce itself, but you never know.

Catrandom, whose cat is passed out on the nice warm monitor

Annie, tortie, dsh, almost 6 years old. Also called Anna-banana. She meows when I sneeze, and will come to me when called.

Cherokee, siamese mix, male, about 4 years old. Sometimes I call him Cherokin. He doesn’t respond to me at all. Unless he is hunry, then I cna’t get him off of me.

Angel, Turkish Angora, male, about 1 year old. I sometimes call him Marshmallow Cat because he is pure white and very fluffy. He knows his name and responds.

Happy, tiger striped, male, about 9 months. No nickname. He’ll come when called if he feels like it.

Pepe, African Grey Parrot, 9 years old (as best as I can figure out). No nickname, although he never just calls himself Pepe, he is Pepe Bird. He responds when called.

Wrigley, Cockatiel, 2 years old. Sometimes I call him Wrigley-Roo. I don’t think he really knows his name but he gets excited when he sees me or when I talk to him.

2 parakeets with no real names. They aren’t tame and they only care that I feed them.

2 rats, male, 5-6 months old. I originally named them after the doctors that I worked with but the novely of that wore off and now I don’t really call them anything.

My boys and I have a Miniature Dachsund. Adorable little guy with short brown hair and big floppy ears.
His name is Nathan(Yep after the Famous Franks.)
We have all kinds of nicknames for him
Weinerboy, wienerschnitzel, weinerwonder, etc.
Sausage Link, cocktail weiner, salchicha, hot doggy, puppy schmuppy, pookie bear.
Can you tell he’s adored? Spoiled little beast. Awwww, now I can’t wait to get home and pet the little frankfurter.

We have three cats.[list]
[li]TC is the oldest, about 6 1/2 years old. He’s solid grey with yellow eyes. He loves to cuddle, and is blatant in his desire to drink my milk as I’m drinking it. (He’ll reach up with his paw and try to lower my glass.)[/li]
TC stands for “The Cat”. A friend had found him, had him fixed, and offered him to me because she was allergic to cats. When my wife and I called to ask about him, we asked how “the cat” was doing. His nickname is Teecers (pronounced “tee sirs”), or FC (@!#?@! cat :D).

This isn’t him, but he looks quite a lot like this:

http://www.cfainc.org/breeds/profiles/jpgs-bob/bsh.jpg

[li]Othello is a tuxedo-colored cat, 2 1/2 years old. His back feet have “socks”, and his front feet are all black except for two toes on each paw. He’s terribly shy, probably because he was a feral kitten that we adopted from Alley Cat Allies.[/li]
We had seen the play “Othello” the month before, so we named our mostly-black kitten after the title character. (Oddly, though, the production we saw had a white Othello [Patrick Stewart] and a black Iago [Ron Canada].)

(no picture available; he’s camera-shy too.)

[li]Spitz is our 1 1/2 year old Maine Coon cat. She’s also tuxedo colored, but with more white in her front paws. Her fur is wonderfully soft and long. She’s polydactyl (extra toed), and has a cute little squeaky meow.[/li]
My sister-in-law named her. Spitz was from a litter of her cat’s. When Spitz got too close to their dog once, well, she spit.

My parents-in-law had taken two of Spitz’s siblings. My wife fell in love with them, and asked if there were any more. When we went over to pick her up, we broke our little niece’s heart. :frowning:

(I have a picture of her, but no place to post her pic.)

Judges 14:9 - So [Samson] scraped the honey into his hands and went on, eating as he went. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them and they ate it; but he did not tell them that he had scraped the honey out of the body of the lion.

PS - Othello doesn’t have any nicknames.

Spitz’s are Spitfire, Spitster, Psychocat (when weather fronts move through), or Princess (she sits rather royally on the top of the cat tree, which she fights for and wins against her larger “brothers”).

I’ve had a ton of pets, but my favorite was my old beagle hound Lubana (Lou or Lulu for short).

The song I used to sing to her was a knock-off of the Joan Baez song “Blue”. When I’d sing it, she’d listen and wag her tail. Now when I think of it, I get all misty eyed:

Had a dog and her name was Lou!
Had a dog and her name was Lou.
Had a dog and her name was Lou!
Betcha five dollars she’s a good one, too.

Showed her my gun and tooted my horn.
Gonna find a possum in the new born corn
Old Lou barked and I went to see
Cornered a possum up in a tree.

Come on, Lou! You good dog, you.

Old Lou died and she died so hard!
Shook the ground in my backyard.
Dug her grave with a silver spade.
Lowered her down with links of chain.

Every link, I did call her name.

Heeee-eeerrrree, Loooo-u!
You good dog, you.
Heeee-eeerreeee, Loooooo-uuuuu!
I’m-a coming there, too.

Remember, you can tune a piano, but you can’t tuna fish!

One cat - 2 year old tiger cat name Wiley.

She is named after Wile E. Coyote of cartoon fame, after her tendency to run smack into the walls when she was a little kitty.

She used to be black and gray striped, but as she has gotten older, some of the grays have turned more to brown. Still cute, though.

Her nickname are simple: Cat and Stupid. She doesn’t answer or come running to any name however. Just this clicking sound I make with my tongue, which she never fails to respond to.

I’ve told this story before, but I’ll tell it again because my dog is my favorite subject.

Her AKC name is Quaint’s Creased Brindle Moon (don’t ask) and her call name is Crease. She was named after Sidney Poitier’s character in the movie Sneakers starring Robert Redford.

She’s a 15-month-old Cardigan Welsh Corgi. See her picture here. She was very young in this picture, so her ears weren’t up yet. They now stand straight up, like a German shepherd’s.

She responds to CreaseGirl, BabyDog, SweetGirl, Princess FuzzyButt, Silly, and Sil. And she smells like Heaven.

I have 10 cats, one of whom is named Dummy. I wrote a song about him, and you can hear it on my web site. I was having boyfriend problems, and I told the boyfriend, I get along better with this cat than I do you, or something like that. So I said I was going to marry my cat, because he never gave me any grief! Well, of course, eventually I had to abandon that plan. sigh! The song is called “Goodbye, Dummy” and it’s me letting him down easy. http://www.thecats.com
There’s pics of all my cats on there too.
Meow!

Two cats. They’re littermates. We got them when were looking for a companion to our old cat, Max. These were the only two remaining of the litter and it seemed only right to keep them together. I wanted to name them Patty and Laverne to go with Max. My husband disagreed. They ended up as Patty and Lefty. Max ended up with incurable kidney problems and has gone to that big litter box in the sky.

Lefty got her name because we got them when we spotted a “free kittens” sign as we were driving on Left Hand Canyon Road. She almost alwyas responds to her name.

Patty got hers because we couldn’t come up with anything more appropriate. She’s quite aloof and only responds when she thinks a treat might be involved.

These cats share the household duties. Lefty makes sure that we take care of the dry food, water, and toilet facilities. She is extremely vocal, and will bug someone until these things are taken care of each day. Patty’s job is to make sure we don’t forget the evening treat of Fancy Feast.

They’re great mousers.

I had a love bird named Birdie. Not very creative, uh? He died last month. I think it was from embarrassment because he wanted a better name.
