I love jogging on the beach and boogie boarding; when I lived in San Diego, I’d be down at the beach 3-4 times a week during the summer. I’m still fairly close to the ocean, but the water in Santa Cruz is just too cold for my liking. So at home I have to settle for doing laps in the apartment pool. Now if they can just keep the water in the pool under 85 degrees this year, I’ll be (reasonably) happy.
What’s your favorite type of water to spend time in or around?
I like the ocean/lake in concept, but when I get there, it’s no good. The sand is dirty and it gets everywhere. I really prefer a private, backyard pool.
I really don’t like salt water, so that is right out. I suppose a pool would be perhaps okay, but my backyard is a lake, and I’m in that thing every day!
I chose “Beach/Ocean” but really I’m talking about Lake Superior, which has way more in common with an ocean than an inland lake if we’re comparing summer fun activities.
If I’m going to go swimming, it will be in a pool. I’m really opposed to being more than knee deep in any other sort of water. Things live in that, FFS! On the other hand, I’m pretty fond of a float trip in the Ozarks and tossing rocks into the local creek, so for general summer outdoor fun other than swimming, I’d go with river/creek.
I’m in north Florida, so any and all of those are acceptable and within easy reach, but my favorites are sinkholes and springs. Deep, clear, and cold - perfect.
When I’m on the road, I’m always on the lookout for places to swim, and public swimming spots can be pretty nasty for various reasons. Still, I’ve had a blast at pools at places like Lava Hot Springs, Glenwood Springs and Furnace Creek in Death Valley. I also really love finding cool “swimming holes”-- the ones in Florida State Parks and the city park in Miles City, Montana come to mind.
