Your Songonyms

Art Blakey : Moanin’

Charles Mingus : Moanin’

I slightly prefer the latter.

David Bowie - “Modern Love”

Peter Gabriel - “Modern Love”

Everyone knows the Mariah Carey song. It’s unavoidable from Thanksgiving to 5 days after Christmas.

But a New Orleans-based band called Vince Vance & The Valiants recorded a song with the same title 5 years earlier. I think I like their song better.

High Hopes (Frank Sinatra):

High Hopes (Panic! At the Disco):

High Hopes (Pink Floyd):

Pere Ubu has often re-used classic song titles for their own work. Their discography includes titles like “Blue Velvet” “Drinking Wine Spodyody” (they changed the spelling for that one) and “Sentimental Journey.”

A Place in the Sun - Michael Burgess

A Place in the Sun - Stevie Wonder

The late Michael Burgess was a sweet-voiced Canadian singer who gained my following after I saw him on stage as Jean Valjean in the original Toronto production of “Les Miserables”. In 1997, he released his first album, “A Place in the Sun”, and the title song was prominently featured in the promo, leading me to buy the album. I really like the buildup leading to the crescendo at the end of the song.

The Cars - Drive

R.E.M. - Drive

The Escape Club “Wild Wild West”

Kool Moe Dee “Wild Wild West”

Jump - Pointer Sisters

Jump - Van Halen

Can’t choose. I like them both.

If your name is Diane, you have your choice of songs: by Trip Shakespeare…

Material Issue…

The Dons…

and a near miss by Fleetwood Mac

I have three Magic songs I like:
The Cars
Olivia Newton-John
Pilot

Of the three I like The Cars song best (my favorite group)

Too bad you had to restrict yourself to only two songs; otherwise you could have included this gem from the Japanese cartoon “Patlabor”

What about Lou Bonnevie’s version of “Heartbreaker” as featured in A.D. Police?

Also, “Loverboy” sings a song called “Jump”, too. They still rock after all these years (and after losing their original bass player in a mysterious boating disappearance).

And Husker Du too.

Wow… I totally expected that Patlabor song to be the City Pop “Midnight Blue” by Megumi Hayashibara, and it’s not! Her song does show up as an ending theme in Slayers, but that’s not where I know it from.

ELO also recorded a song called “Midnight Blue” for their 1979 album Discovery (“Disco? Very!”).

Under “All Night Long”, we have:

(of course) Lionel Richie

Billy Squier

Rainbow

… and then Peter Frampton

Hank Williams - You Win Again
Hot Chocolate - So You Win Again
Bee Gees - You Win Again

The latter two are fun pop songs, but the first is a Hank Williams classic, and not really much beats a Hank Williams classic, so I go for that.

After watching a lot of these videos I have to say that, Holy cow 4:3 sucks so much.

Thought of another pair:

The Beach Boys - Do It Again
Steely Dan - Do It Again

I like both very much and cannot decide which is better.

ETA: I just noticed again that “Can’t Buy A Thrill” has one of the ugliest cover of a great album. But that’s a thought for another thread…

Here’s a famous pair. “The End”, by:

The Doors

And the Beatles
