Hey all. I’ve just written this review of Flatland and was wondering what my fellow Dopers had to say about the book. I’m not askin’ a really specific question, just wondering what you thought of it (Love? Hate?) and how your notes compare to mine.
Thanks!
It’s been a long time since I read it, and my copy’s on the other side of the world right now, but I’d have to say my opinion jives with yours. Very entertaining book.
Ian Stewart’s sequel Flatterland: Like Flatland, Only More So, is also worth a read. It looks at some more advanced ideas like fractional dimensions and space curvature, but does so in a very understandible way.
It doesn’t exactly leap off the page (har!).
Hey wow, thanks! I’d never heard of that one – just Dionys Burger’s sequel, Sphereland, which I enjoyed but not quite as much as the original.
I assume we’re all also The Dot and the Line fans as well?
There’s also The Planiverse by AK Dewdney and Spaceland by Rudy Rucker. What are all these spin offs? Geometrical fan fic?
