Actually it’s a music video that I can’t find - I would have been between 9 - 11 (1982-1984) when I saw it and for the life of me I can’t remember the song or band. It was about a teenage girl who’s being abused at home so she runs away to her boyfriend, and IIRC he abuses her too so she runs away again and at the end of the video she’s walking through a field and ends up at a little building, peeks in the window and sees the band recording the song. The last scene is of her hanging with the band, safe at last.
I keep thinking it’s Manfred Mann but I’ve Googled a few times and have never found it.
Would have been the '73 series (I’m not that old!! )
I remember watching it and nearly having a nervous breakdown as I’d never seen anyone die in a TV show before (aside from Red Shirts) and it was horribly traumatic. IIRC there were thousands of complaints about it!
It would have been the 1973 series - I’m from the UK and in my mid 40s and I remember it (in colour).
I only followed the series loosely so I don’t remember many details. Apart, that is, from that final episode. The announcer warned before the broadcast that it was very sad (something I don’t recall the BBC doing for any subsequent children’s programme, though Grange Hill for example featured several deaths during its long run).
For years I searched online for videos or reference to those broadcasts. Then finally someone put up the videos on YouTube last year.
I don’t know why I had a strong memory of that show as a young teen. Additionally, I loved the voice of the “question/answer” announcer (not Art Fleming).
For me, it’s an episode of the Grand Prize Game, from the Bozo show, and it would have aired sometime between 1983-1985. The kid whose number came up on the Bozoputer was BIG. I don’t know how old he was but he was just about as tall as Bozo. He had no trouble sinking every ping pong ball, but what was so memorable about it was how much the whole situation tickled Bozo. They’d bring out the prize associated with the bucket and it would be a tiny T-shirt or tennies. Bozo was just keeping it together. He almost lost it when they brought out the wagon–he said something like, “Yeah, you’ll get a lot of mileage out of that if your feet don’t wear out!” He did assure the kid that he’d get the clothing items in his size, but the whole thing was just hilarious!
There was also an episode of The Joker’s Wild where the host, Jack Barry, was interviewing a new contestant. She said she was an organ player and that her fiance was, as well. Without thinking how it would sound, Barry said (as best as I can remember), “When you get your organs together, I’ll bet you make some beautiful music!” The audience was roaring and JB went beet red, saying, “I can’t believe I said that!” The contestant and her fiance found it terribly funny, too, although she was pretty red-faced herself!
