YouTube "forbidding" ad blockers. Concerns, if any?

Can you point those filter settings out? I’ve lost those buttons too, and I also find that YouTube no longer tracks what videos I’ve viewed in the past.

thanks!

Sure!

Do we add those via the ‘import’ tab on uBlock?

Here:

Then here:

Be sure to “Apply Changes” when done then re-load the YouTube page.

Thanks, but sadly uBlock gives me an error messages on items 2-18 after I paste them in, saying a percentage sign is expected on each of those lines.

Maybe a line break problem given the SDMB is not printing them all on one line? You can see in the pic above (taken from my filters list) each entry is on one line. Also, I am using Firefox (not sure it matters for this though).

How do I do code here?

I’m using chrome. this is what it looks like.

Yeah…I think it is the word wrap starting on line 3. Each entry should be one line no matter how long.

And be aware Chrome will be killing uBlock and other ad blockers soon (this month it seems).

I can’t figure out how to turn off word wrap. I think I’ll just have to move my YouTube viewing to firefox.

Thanks for your efforts on my behalf!

ETA: Well, it also does the wordwrap thing and gives the same error messages when I try to add those filters to Firefox. Just not my day.

Highlight it and select “Preformatted text” (</>)

Well, that seemed to work! Thanks so much!!!

Thanks!

Forgot to say thanks for all the info here. Sounds like just what I want. Agreed about the few-to-no results. I loathe how Google sometimes ignores search terms just to give me some results. And the occasions that it legitimately corrects a spelling error are outweighed by all the times it has altered the thing that I deliberately searched for.

Plus, banishing Pinterest might be worth the price on its own.

Blocking pinterest results is the entire reason I have this extension installed in all of my browsers.

I am not sure what has changed but I am getting ads on YouTube again.

Not a lot…waaay less than without an ad blocker but some are happening again. I am not getting them mid-video but at the beginning. And not always, only a few. I have not researched this or updated anything but YouTube is clearly still at it.

I am using Firefox and uBlock Origin on Windows 10.

I started having trouble with uBlock a few days ago where videos would only load an error. On the uBlock reddit was a post about it and them saying they’d have to loosen some other filter to temporarily restore service. That didn’t work for me (the ads would play but the video still would not) but opening the video in a private window works.

Like 90% of reports in this thread, I mentioned this to some friends who all said “Works fine for me…”.

I’m getting a complete stop on all videos from YouTube now - it will not play anything while AdBlock is active. (I’m using Chrome on Mac). I have to disable AdBlock and endure the ads to watch anything. Frustrating.

(Brave /ublock)

For a few weeks once in a while a video won’t play (either from start or after a pause) and an ad-ish thing appears with the play button. Testing, the play button does nothing. I reload the page proceed from there although often I lose my place in a paused video.

The really, really, awful thing is the paused ad is sometimes indistinguishable from the paused video if I’m not familiar with the channel. This is clearly a violation of FTC rules: There should be big letters saying “AD” on such a screen.

I find that Brave’s built in adblocking is working okay. A little bit ago, it had a bit of a problem where the video would spin for a few seconds, and then show some text indicating where an ad should be, and I’d have to click “Skip” to watch the video. But now even that has gone away, and YouTube works normally.

I assumed you turned off Brave’s built in adblock. Maybe try disabling uBlock Origin on YouTube and reenabling Brave shields on YouTube.

(And if you do have both of them running, then maybe try disabling one or the other on YouTube, but not both.)

I think you absolutely have to ditch Chrome if you want to avoid ads.

Google makes Chrome and have been clear they mean to stop ad blockers.
