YouTube movies - how do I get it on a smart tv?

We have a “smart” tv. (If you ask me, it’s dumb as a rock). We have access to YouTube and Netflix and Hulu and a couple more things. If we subscribed to those services, we’d be watching movies on them right now. But I can’t figure out how to get to YouTube movies. I can do it on my computer, but not on the tv. Is it only available to computers? What’s the deal on this. Yes, we’d like to watch The Interview on our tv, rather than scrunching up around a little laptop, but how do we do that on the tv? Not possible?

It depends on your particular TV and its version of the YouTube app. It may or may not be possible:

If it isn’t, you can physically connect your computer to your TV with a HDMI cable, or get a Chromecast.

if the “YouTube movies” you’re talking about are their new “rental” model, it’s probable that the software in your TV doesn’t know how to deal with them.

Want to watch The Interview, huh? I was trying to figure this out, too, and will probably have to do it from my computer instead of the smart TV (Panasonic).

As the replies so far have shown “smart” tvs are anything but smart. I have one, a nice one, and its internet abilities are atrocious to the point of worthless.

My best solution is to use another device to get the content and stream that to the TV. There are a variety of ways to do this which will depend on what equipment you have.

All that said I watched “The Interview” and it is not very good at all.

Various methods already mentioned but (and this is obviously of no use to the OP) if anyone is on the lookout for a smart TV with a decent interface I can highly recommend Samsung. Netflix, youtube and the iplayer all run pretty seemlessly and the interface is logical.

What model TV do you have? I have a Vizio E600i-B3 TV (as well as a Chromecast, and an Amazon Fire TV Stick), and the TV, now that it has been set up with WiFi, allows me to use the Google Cast extension from Chrome to show YouTube videos on the TV. It’s much easier than using the browsing interface on the TV. The Amazon Fire TV Stick, since it also has a YouTube app, also allows me to cast from Chrome too. My Android phone and tablet, set up with the Chromecast and YouTube apps, also let me cast Youtube videos to both the Vizio and the Amazon Fire TV stick.

Very handy, how they have this set up.

Well, We have a Samsung Smart TV and you can select YouTube from the “Smart Hub”, but from there it is not so convenient. You can use your remote to search, but a better alternative is a wireless keyboard. Still, it is not what it should be. Overall the “smart” in Smart TV is not so smart, as others have noted. I suspect that the manufacturers will probably make smart tvs in the future which really are, but that day has not arrived.
