Zelazny cites his favorite movies: “…I’m a sucker for any flic that contains a) Humphrey Bogart, b) Alec Guiness. I’ve liked maybe an hundred movies in my life. I’ll reminisce…THE SORCERESS, THE SEVENTH SEAL, TO DIE IN MADRID, CASABLANCA, THE AFRICAN QUEEN…BLACK ORPHEUS, HAMLET (Olivier), and–oh hell! I can’t do it! I see now that I could fill the page. (But don’t leave out KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS). I am very taken by Grade B stuff–don’t get me wrong. I could name tons of them, too. Recently, I have liked THE GRADUATE, ROSEMARY’S BABY, THERESE AND ISABELLE…”
Zelazny cites his favorite sci-fi writers: “…Among the old-timers, Stanley Weinbaum. Others I like are Sturgeon, Bradbury, Phil Farmer, Phil Dick, Heinlein…”
Zelazny discusses sci-fi on television: “I’ve caught STAR TREK (in fact, I almost wrote for it at one point), and sometimes I liked it and sometimes I didn’t. It depends on…THE AVENGERS? Yes. When I can catch it, I enjoy it. THE PRISONER?..”
Zelazny cites his favorite music: “Baroque, modern jazz and folk. Also, some of the better acid rock combos…”
Zelazny reveals his current activity (1969): “…I’ve got five books out now and three scheduled for later publication–these latter being CREATURES OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS (Doubleday), DAMNATION ALLEY (Putnam’s) and NINE PRINCES IN AMBER (Doubleday). I am currently working on a novel–DEUS IRAE–in collaboration with Philip K. Dick. Subsequent to this, I am going to do a fantasy entitled JACK OF SHADOWS for Signet books. I just did a story which makes up a third of a book–the book to be called TOMORROW TIMES THREE, or something like that–where Bob Silverberg, Jim Blish & I each did a 20,000-word story…based on an idea supplied by Arthut C. Clarke…I’m also collaborating just now on a short story with Harlan Ellison, for a collection that…I may be doing a movie script later on this year, but…”
Zelazny speculates on his future projects, “…including a couple of children’s stories (laugh! But Vaughn Bode will be illustrating)…”
Zelazny reveals his own contribution to Marvel Comics: “I met Stan Lee…a real pleasant individual. Awhile back, I got an idea for one and wrote to him about it. They’re using it. I believe it will be in the issue of the FANTASTIC FOUR that comes out in February…Dr. Doom finds himself forced to be a hero, for completely selfish purposes.”
