Earlier this week…
Today…
He came (to L.A.)
He saw (from the bench, watching his new team go 3-0 down, until he came on as a sub in the 71st minute)
He conquered (scoring a wondergoal and a winning header in injury time to see his new team, LA Galaxy, beat city rivals LAFC in a 4-3 thriller)
The word is zlatanesque.
If his knee injury from last year stays away, this pretty-well makes him still at that top of his game, more so, than any other international star that I can think of when they entered the league. All of them - in the twilight of their careers. To be sure, ZI’s also getting twilight-y, but is much less so than the others, upon MLS entry, except for maybe Jermaine Defoe, who, while not as high a profile player as ZI, was arguably still a good ways from his twilight when he slippery’ed his way back into the EPL again.
And with a healthy, still career-vital ZI at LA’s disposal, I see him tearing shit up this season. I’ll be very surprised if he doesn’t win the scoring crown by a significant margin. And of course, lots of colourful highlights. I’ll be let-down if I don’t see any of his ninja high-kick goals. (He’s a taekwondo black belt)
Oh, and whacky tweets.
Is David jealous of the attention?
My only comment on the first goal to my son, who sent me the highlight, was that MLS keepers might actually have to learn where to position themselves.
Zlatan’s first goal was really great. The keeper might have been positioned better, but that is a mistake that happens in other top leagues regularly, as well. In the first place, it was a really well taken volley by Ibrahimovic.
His second goal, on the other hand, was mainly caused by extremly weak defending. The winger who played the cross was left all alone and Zlatan was surrounded by three defenders plus the keeper and none of those four players seemed to really try to disturb Ibrahimovic. Not that weak defending is something that doesn’t happen elsewhere, but I think that was remarkably bad defending.
Zlatan has long been someone I wanted to come to MLS and kinda feared. A lot of the DPs were a little past their prime, but still had a lot to give. Henry, Villa, Keane, etc were all younger than Zlatan. However, unlike them, Zlatan can create his own goals more than all of them. He’s going to be very exciting, but he very well might break the league. I could see Zlatan scoring 40 goals this year.
Yeah, he’s right up there as one of the greatest players to appear in the MLS.
His career can basically be divided into two parts - the Ian Thorpe years and the Frank Zappa years. He’s currently the second-most decorated active footballer in the world, having won 32 trophies in his career and has won the league eleven times - in Sweden, Italy, Spain and France. As well as scoring on his debut for Galaxy, he also scored on his debuts for Manchester United, Paris St-Germain, Malmo, Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus.
Check out his farewell message to Manchester United - quintessential Zlatan. And with the football world going crazy this week about Cristiano’s Ronaldo bicycle kick goal against Juventus, Zlatan had the perfect riposte: “It was a nice goal, but he should try it from 40 metres.” He’s right, of course.
