Zoinks, dougie_monty, what's your problem?

Then why the hell are you defending him as staunchly and loud-mouthedly as, say, Bill O’Reilly defends the Republican Party or Bill Donohue defends the Catholic Church?

The same thing could easily be said about South Park, Family Guy, Saturday Night Live, Robot Chicken, MAD Magazine, practically any parody of a character on the Internet (some more well-done than others), those horrid Friedberg/Selzer “Fill-in-the-Blank” Movies, this very message board, and many other sources of parody.

The better analogy would be “Simon Legree in the mold of Mr. Chips,” because as you continually fail to understand, the parody depiction in question is Son of Sam and Harvey et al. as Shaggy and Scooby et al., not Shaggy and Scooby et al. as Son of Sam and Harvey et al.

Now hurry. No one’s defended Carol Burnett’s cruel and darkly sinister lampooning of Scarlett O’Hara’s curtain dress. I used to mock people who wore awful hand me downs when I was younger, before my sense of right and wrong were in place. I now know how cruel I was being to laugh so.

Indeed. And what about Mel Brooks’s depiction of Adolf Hitler as a bumbing hippie (and his later update depicting him as a flamboyant gay man)? Indeed, it was wrong of me to laugh at such a depiction when I was younger. Now that I have a sense of ethics, I know the truth.

 I am not of a mind to bandy words. What I meant is that I would resent seeing Mr. Chips portrayed as if he were actually Simon Legree. Does that make it clearer?
And if the Venture Brothers characters are “serial killers,” or whatever, passing themselves off as Scooby-Doo character wannabes–if that’s what you’re getting at–Then I would say I have cause to object. But I’m not sure that is what is being expressed (And before you ask, I don’t have cable TV, just broadcast).
I am content to drop the issue and regard those characters as the pearls and myself as the swine. It’s less stressful to me than attempting to acquire the sophistication necessary to appreciate them as anyone else might.

See?

Dougie doesn’t it make you wonder at all why absolutely no one is agreeing with you? I’m not trying to appeal to the public, but all I’m saying is… maybe you really aren’t getting it? Maybe there’s something you are missing?

Good luck changing his mind. As a public service, I refer you to this thread, in which Dougie refutes all personal experience about the effects of LSD in favor of a scare-tactic drug class he took in high school in 1965, and an episode of Dragnet that he saw in 1967, which he seems to think is a documentary.

dougie_monty, you have yet to explain why you bumped a two-year-old thread to complain vociferously about a parody – which you now say you never even watched in context – of a show you didn’t even like.

Also, if you have indeed once admitted that you don’t have a sense of humor (and judging from your posts, I definitely believe it!), isn’t it possible that you can’t adequately judge a parody intended as humor?

It also seriously makes me wonder why he hasn’t pitted more stuff. Honestly, without even trying, I’ve come across edgier stuff on the Internet and on TV. Granted, that’s because I like satire, but people have been parodying and satirizing pop culture for years. And this was a pretty mild example. dougie monty’s head would explode if he saw them portraying Cookie Monster as a drug addict on “Family Guy.” Or Bert and Ernie as a gay couple (also on “Family Guy”). “Bert! You’re yelling, Bert!”

ETA: and Morbo. I beg to differ about the Dragnet ep being the most hilarious depiction of drug use. That honor goes to the caffeine pills episode of “Saved by the Bell.” (They didn’t have the gumption to actually use a moderately frightening substance?)

Anyone that didn’t know years ago that Velma was a lesbian just wasn’t paying attention.

[nitpick] while SbtB was a horrible piece of crap, caffeine really is some scary shit. It’s addictive, causes withdrawal that can be nasty, and is absolutely lethal once you start counting it in grams. [/nitpick]

Wow, was Jessie taking that many? It’s been a few years since I actually saw the whole thing. I thought she was only taking a few pills here and there. They made it seem like it was amphetamine-level-scary.

To be honest, I have no idea. Been a while since I amused myself after school with that piece of crap.

But, let’s see…

NoDoze has, IIRC, about 200mg of caffeine per pill (roughly equal to a single cup of coffee). (One cup of coffee per day, by the way, is enough to cause addiction and lead to some pretty nasty withdrawal symptoms if you stop).
Erowid estimates the LD 50 at anywhere from 3-20 grams (not exact, I know). So a handfulll of NoDoze could probably kill someone if the circumstances were right.

That being said, Caffeine isn’t as scary as amphetamines unless you are talking about it in grams. Then it’s baaaaaaaaaad shit.

Ahh. Creepy. I’ll stick with my no caffeine policy then. Thanks, FinnAgain.

Can we agree it was ridiculous that the Saved by the Bell gang had a sip of beer (or was it one can?) and then got into an accident that was attributed to the dangers of drunk driving?

Yeah, SbtB was utter crap that got all DARE-esque when it tried to get preachy.

And, just so I can throw a cite out on this:

I think this is the first time we’ve ever had one Doper pit another over Scooby Doo. This is the only other Scooby-related Pit thread, as far as I know.

I can understand not liking the Venture Brothers and all that, but I can’t imagine how a non-Scooy Doo fan got that worked up over it, dougie_monty.

And that one is about Scrappy Doo. Unlike this one, it’s a pitting just about anyone can get behind.

I can’t. In fact, I’m kinda jonesin’ for season four to show its face.

Sorry about the reference to “jonesin’,” dougie_monty.

It’s this fall, right?

That doesn’t seem very fair. We didn’t get a new season last fall, IIRC. Or am I mis-remembering?
