Anybody else play Ultima Online?

Yeah, I know it's pretty old, but I just ordered a copy of Ultima Online: Third Dawn (the 3D version) for $20. Anybody else play this, or used to play it?

I'm looking for tips, and maybe setting up a SDMB Guild.

why would you pay to play

why would you pay to play when if you wait less than a month you can play for free, with not a hundred people but with hundreds of gamers?

Ultima Online was the last new game I ever played. I had gotten out of video games in my early teens but when I heard about it I was so excited I had to get it and played for years. It was like what I'd always dreamed about being technically possible when I was younger and was just so cool that it finally existed. I don`t know if there were actually previous MMORPG or whatever they're called, but to me Ultima Online was the first.

I downloaded it and played as part of a free trial within the past year and it was fun to be back but I definitely didn't get into it again... I think I only played 2-3 times.

Well, nearly 10 years ago when this was posted, I'm sure it made sense.

What if every time a new game came out, everyone said "Sure, I could pay to play it now, but in 10 years it'll be free, so I'll wait"? I think it'd put a damper on development.

Moved MPSIMS --> The Game Room, which hadn't been created the last time this thread saw the light of day.

I'm currently making a private shard for my girlfriend's kids to play on. Essentially, I'm trying to work it out as a one-player game for more than one player....
