Hooked up?

First, I am happily engaged.

I am curious, has anyone "hooked up" from the straight dope? What I mean is, has anyone ever met with a stranger on this board and gone on a date? If so, has it ever progressed to more than that?

I'm wondering because I was talking with some co-workers who apparently date exclusively from chat-rooms and similar web-related venues.

Congrats, Meatros! That's all. No comment on the rest of your post cause I found Mr2U the old fashioned way. Picked him up in a bar.

Thanks, thanks, um...I've been engaged for a while though. I put that there so no one would think that I was trolling for hook-ups (not that anyone would mind you).

Although come to think of it, I never officially announced my engagement here, so I might as well do that now.

Thanks all!

It happens on a fairly regular basis. They are called DopeFests. Coupling happens. Dating happens, engagement happens, and marriages happen. Their is even a <gasp> Baby that happened!

We should have a sticky or FAQ that is occasionally updated with "Who met each other on the Straightdope?"

These are ones off the top of my head who met through the SDMB who are either engaged or married. I’m sure there are more.

Verrain and TruePisces – Engaged 2002

Montfort and Anniz – Married 2001
AirmanDoorsUSAF and MsRobyn – Married with BabyDoors
Wierddave and GingeroftheNorth – Married 2002
SpinyNorman and Shayna – Married 2002
MrCynical and MissCreant – Married 2002
UncleBill and Geobabe– Married 2002

Plus hundreds of other relationships past and present, individual dates, and one or two hot sweaty nights, which I will not go into here.

But get her a white gold ring. She won't 'fess up for anything else.

Well, that depends. If it's not white gold, can I pawn it? If I can pawn it, I might spill the beans.

Ahh... who are we kidding? Tell you what, UncleBill, you offer to fix this woman up with a baked brie or some fabulously fried fondue and you'll have her singing all she knows in seconds flat.

Hmm... a baked brie. Much, much cheaper than a ring... gotta remember that.

Actually, that's not as true as you'd think . . . but you're right; a dough-encrusted wheel all to myself, with a coupla bulbs of roasted garlic on the side, and a pot of chocolate fondue to wash it down, I'll tell you anything you want to know.

And Genseric and I have a thing going currently. Where it's going, no one is quite sure, but it's definitely going with a swing.

A big swing. Yay!

You can add me and RickQ to the "met on the dope and married in 2002" list.

It makes for a fun story to tell people. Hmmmm....woman in Michigan, man in England. "How did you meet?" they ask. We usually start with something like "well, there is this website called the dope...but it is not like it sounds."

For some reason, if I tell someone we met on the net (and I usually do), I want them to know it was not a dating site. Don't know why that is so important to me, but it is.

And Brynda, I (for some reason) feel kind of the same way you do. It's weird.

Wha...? You mean, with jewelry, you get favors?

What kind of favors are you talking about, anyway? I mean, should I ante up with the pretty, sparkly stuff (yes, yes, maybe even white gold and a stone of sorts), will she get my mail, fetch my slippers or refill my pipe?

Gosh, I need to know what to expect.

By this, you'd think Verrain and I are the only ones left who have yet to tie the knot.

Gunslinger and racinchikki are among the Engaged group, as are iampunha and fizzestothetop. They're the only other ones I can think of off the top of my head.

But I think Verrain and I are the next to change status.

No. And no. But it does have something to do with the owner of a Care Bear and an Allman Brothers fan.

An Allman Brothers fan? Is it the accordion-folded kind that you can fold up, or is it the "cardboard stapled to a big popsicle stick" kind you get in church?

I'll adapt. After all, if... er, favors are involved, then adaptation is best.

Besides, resistance, I hear, is futile.

TwistofFate and Synnic met on the boards and at a EuroDope. They're dating.

Coldfire has mentioned he has a Doper Sweetheart, too.

I can think of several others, but I'm not sure if they are public knowledge or not, so I shan't mention them.

I can think of three more couples who are fairly public about it and so (hopefully) won't mind me mentioning them -

TwistOfFate and Tir Tinuviel (Met at Londope 2002)
Coldfire and Heloise (Met at DopeToberfest 2001)
Matt_mcl and Potter (Met... online? I dunno!)

None of them are engaged... yet

Damn, I should've seen Anahita's post on preview. It should be noted that when Twisty and his lovely lady met, her screen name was Synnic, but it has now changed to Tir Tinuviel. He's not seeing two different women!
