Director John Waters is "Marylander of the Year"

We're busting our buttons!

Baltimore Sun's Marylander of the Year

Quote:
John Waters has been making trouble in these precincts for years. From the scatological to the homicidal, he's been churning out films that seem to come from a parallel universe to the one where good taste resides. (That parallel universe, by the way, had its Big Bang origins right around Broadway - the real Broadway, the one that crosses Eastern Avenue, near where the wig store used to be.) He made Hairspray the film way back in 1988, but it's the stage version, in which he also had a hand, that has put Charm City on the map.

And that's why John Waters is The Sun's Marylander of the Year.

We know what you're thinking. Have we forgotten Pink Flamingos? And Odorama? Do we approve of Serial Mom? Or Pecker? And what about that pencil-thin mustache?

Here's our answer: You don't have to love them all to appreciate the singular mind behind them.

Oooooohh..... that's really nice. John Waters seems to be a really great guy. I love his books, "Crackpot" and "Shock Value". And he's someone that "Bal'mer" can definitely be proud of. I guess it's time to watch "Hairspray" again.

"If I ever do a hairspray sequel, it would take place a few years later and be called Headband. Tracy Turnblad would move to San Francisco and become a terrorist".- John Waters.

Not to mention "Serial Mom", "Cecil B. Demented", "Cry-Baby" (who else would cast Traci Lords in her first non-porn lead), "Polyester", "Pink Flamingos",

"I know I'll never make a sequel to Pink Flamingos because it would have to end with Divine taking a shit and the dog eating it."- John Waters

and "Female Trouble", among others.

Now, let's all do the Madison down Eastern Avenue.

"You're lookin' good -
A big strong line"

Surprised it's not Gov. Ehrlich. If I hear the phrase, "first Republican Governor in 36 years" again, I'm going to scream.

Actually Waters has written a script for a Flamingos sequel called "Flamingos Forever." It's included in the book "Divine Trash" along with the scripts for "Pink Flamingos" and "Desperate Living." He talks about trying to get the project started in a foreward to the book, but shelved the movie forever with the deaths of Edith Massey and then Divine.
