The record heavy snows in these parts (central North Carolina) have brought a wide assortment of birds to our feeder. In addition to the regulars (sparrows, juncoes, and cardinals) we have recently had purple finches, one kingfisher (which IIRC does not normally do birdseed), and a pileated woodpecker!

Those things are huge! Take your average duck, dress him in a Woody Woodpecker suit, and give him perching footgear, and you have a fair approximation of the bird. Right outside our living room window. We were amazed.

The bird was as goofy as his cartoon namesake too. He stunted around the yard a bit, "landing" on the side of a big pine tree. My wife now refers to them as pixiliated woodpeckers after watching him.
