Dope Trek - A guide to the inside jokes and other FAQs in the Trek/Enterprise threads

Or: I don’t remember a panda in Star Trek: Enterprise

As was discussed in this thread, there are a few inside jokes and other references in the Trek threads that cause great confusion when newcomers stumble upon them.

So, for those either new to the boards or new to the Enterprise/Trek discussions, welcome! Here’s a handy dandy guide to some of the inside jokes and references that are tossed about by the “regulars”. Please add to the list of questions and answers if you come up with new ones.

Before we start with the list, please keep in mind that I do not and can not speak for everyone who has posted in all of these threads. Any errors contained within this OP are entirely my fault and I appologize in advance for any mistakes, misstatements, or misattributions. All complaints must be filled out in triplicate and stapled to a $100.00 bill before sending them to me for my consideration. Thank you.

Please also consider the fact that, while we are fans, most of us are not ubergeeks that take this stuff as matters of life and death. Many of our posts are written with our tounges firmly planted in our cheeks and we are extremely fond of puns, parodies, non-sequiters, and other miscellaneous bad jokes. Sometimes there is no deeper meaning or inside joke.

  • Lets start with the big one. The one that’s asked most often: Panda.
Panda was originally introduced by Enderw24 as “Pander the Panda” in a brief parody. Any gratuitous character or scene that has been added for the purpose of pandering to a portion of the audience can be referred to as “panda”, but it has come to almost exclusively be used to refer to sex, T&A, or other bits obviously inserted to titilate the viewers.

  • Phaser cutting phasers: During one of the many hijacks, Wearia made an offhand joke mentioning many different types of non-existant phasers, including “phaser cutting phasers.” Tracer reacted unbelievingly but Carniverousplant, playing along, stated that they had first been mentioned in the Original Series episode, “Devil in the Dark”. Tracer, in a demonstration of credulity not often found in these threads, then went to great llengths to procure a copy of “Devil in the Dark” in order to verify the line where “phaser cutting phasers” was mentioned (unless he was pulling our collective legs about that). You can guess the results of his search.

  • Quantam: This is probably obvious, but for anyone who doesn’t know, Scott Bakula (Archer) starred for several years on the TV show “Quantam Leap” Because of this, and becasue people felt that Archer looked somewhat lost for the first couple of seasons, he is occasionally referred to, usually somewhat derisively, as “Quantam”

  • Hoshi, Hoshi, Hoshi: Although T’Pol is the obvious T&A on the show, many if not most posters in these threads have expressed a preference for Hoshi as their hottie of choice with Tars Tarkas as probably the one who has most often mentioned his undying lust for her. “Topless Hoshi”, “Naked Hoshi” or just “Hoshi, Hoshi, Hoshi” are throwaway lines that refer to that, as well as refering to the episode where she lost her top in an improbable manner.

  • Fake spoilers: Last season, in response to the bad episodes at the begining of the season, many posters started making up fake plot points simply because the real plots were so bad. It amused us. The incidence of this declined sharply as the episodes themselves became worth discussing.

That’s probably enough for now. Please add to the list, or correct as necessary.

So is there no serious discussion of the episodes? I’ve read some of the Enterprise threads, and I’ve been lost. I appreciate your guide, as it explains a lot, but is the show so universally reviled that we will not be seriously discussing the show here?

Good lord. My thread birthed a thread. They’re breeding!

Linus, thanks for the leg up on the discussions. I’m gonna see the Impulse re-run tomorrow night, and will then probably have some brand new confusions after re-reading the SDMB impulse thread.

Is it OK to also ask dumb questions about the show itself, since I’m a latecomer? like: why do they keep looking for whatever-it-is to plate onto the ship ( it’s starting to sound like the “armor” on Galaxy Quest) ? What are the weapons (phase pistol? MACO rifle? ) ? Why is StarFleet and the “Marines” mentioned in discussions – are there really civilians and military on the ship? What the hell is the “Anomaly”? What does MACO stand for? And just who is sleeping with who on the show?

ivylass, I didn’t take all the inside jokes as reviling. To me, it means the show is followed so closely that it’s spawning it’s own culture and language around here.

Oh Linus, you’ve made me the happiest boy in all of St.Luvenshtein.

ivy, there is some serious discussion, but normally there isn’t much to talk about. Most Enterprise episodes are self explanitory, and other are mind numbingly bad. We tend to make up our own stuff to cover for such instances. Occasionally with hilarious results.
I get lost frequently. If I show up on the boards and there’s already 2 or more pages on an Ent Thread, thats a guarantee that I’ll have no idea whats going on. Its still pretty easy to pop in an get involved though. Some veterans of Ent Threads (like myself) have no idea whats going on most of the time, we’re just good at covering up that fact.

Ivylass: The show is considered subpar to TNG, DS9, and TOS but I wouldn’t call it reviled. The redheaded stepchild award still goes to Voyager, I believe.

The thing is that most of the prolific regulars (NoClueboy, vivalostwages, the AWOL Kn*ckers, tracer, Tars Tarkas, carnivorousplant, Linus Van Pelt, Aesiron, Wearia, Monstre, Corner Case) treat the threads as a place to chat about life, the universe, and everything else in addition to Trek itself. Others, like Cervaise and kingpengvin stick mostly to serious discussion of the show, as do most of the other less prolific Trek Dopers like Rue DeDay, tarragon918, etc.

And ask away about anything, squeegee.

  1. Why do they keep looking for [Terellium-D] to plate onto the ship?

Terellium-D is an ore that somehow allows ships to avoid the anolies inside the Delphic Expanse. In one of the first few episodes, the ship ran across a mining colony that supplied the stuff but was unaware of its value. Two or three episodes later, they found out their mistake when a captured person onboard the Enterprise made an offhand remark about how stupid they were for not having refitting their ship yet.

  1. What are the weapons?

The handheld energy weapons are phase-pistols… a predecessor to phasers, I guess. That’s ignoring the laser usage in the original pilot of TOS though. I can’t remember if the MACOs use a different weapon (other than it being a rifle, I mean).

I believe the Enterprise itself is equipped with Polarized Hull Plating (shields), Phase cannons (phasers), and, I think, photonic torpedoes (photorps).

They also rely on their shuttles since the transporter isn’t trusted yet and use a grappling device instead of a tractor beam.

  1. Why is StarFleet and the “Marines” mentioned in discussions – are there really civilians and military on the ship?

Think of Starfleet as the Navy and the MACOs as the Marines. The former’s there to take the ship where it needs to go and the latter’s there to blow shit up when they get there.

There are no civilians on board.

  1. What the hell is the “Anomaly”?

It’s called the Delphic Expanse; it’s pretty much the Bermuda Triangle of known space. Lots of unexplainable phenomenon and so on. The Enterprise is trying to find the Xindi, who supposedly live within this area of space.

  1. What does MACO stand for?

I had to look it up - Military Assault Command Operations. We usually just call them Marines or MACOs.

  1. Just who is sleeping with who on the show?

Characterwise, no-one other than Phlox, who comes from a polygamous species. There have been hints at a future T’pol/Archer hookup and there’s the current Trip/T’Pol pressure points storyline that might blow up into something more though.

ivylass – there is some serious discussion of the episodes, but much more this season than last (considering that the second season was pretty weak, especially in the middle).

Many of the developments like MACOs (Space Marines) and the Trellium-D are new to this season, in which the producers are no doubt trying to pump up ratings by taking the show in a different direction, including a story arc that will continue through the season (based on last season’s finale, where the Earth was seriously attacked by an alien species – millions dead). Time Travel[sup]TM[/sup] figures in, and probably will again (happy, NoClueBoy?)

And I’ll be seeing you in the 24: Season 3 threads in a few weeks.

The “anomalies” are techno-babble anomalies in space that cause screwy things to happen, like weird gravitational pulls and disrupted systems. Enterprise ran into one in episode 2 of this season, and this is where the alien mentioned by Aesiron scoffed at them for their lack of Trellium-D insulation of the ship. The anomalies seem to be common in the Delphic Expanse (which didn’t figure into the show until this season).

Other possible FAQs:

  • What is Verbing? – something that vivalostwages does to people’s names in the Ent threads, for fun. Using one’s username as a verb, in a way that hints at typical behavior for said user.

  • What’s the deal about the theme song? - the theme song in the opening credits is different than all Treks that came before. Notably, it used to be symphonic themes. Now it’s a song with lyrics. The background music changed this season – same song, new musical score to it. Some like it better. Some like it less. Some have hated it from day one. Listen and you be the judge.

  • What the hell is NoClueBoy going on about? - We don’t know either. Just move along…

It’s Quantum, not Quantam.

Tam was on Firefly. Which we all loved, btw.

Also… I belive Dr Phlox is a civilian on loan to Star Fleet from Denobula.

He isn’t a regular part of Star Fleet, that’s for sure, tho he is obligated to observe certain protcols.

Chef is an invisible character and Crewman Cutter is Dr Phlox’s GF.

Mayweather rarely has a speaking part, so we make fun of that.

Porthos is the dog.

Quantum is obsessed with college boys in swimsuits. It’s true!

Yeah, I noticed after posting that I made the same spelling mistake three times in one paragraph but decided that posting again to point it out would be unnecessary.

I knew I could count on you NCB!

While we’re at it, it’s Trip, not Tripp.

And it took me the longest time to realize that Trip is not short for Charles.

And it took me the longest time to realize that Trip is not short for Charles.

I’d agree with that. I gave up on watching Voyager regularly in the middle of the second season, though I watched one-off episodes here and there based on buzz. (Not including the series finale.) I’ve given Enterprise more slack, but my patience is definitely running thin.

Alla these maroons make fun of me because rather than discussing the show I usually write a ten-thousand word essay explaining why I think each week’s episode is little more than a continuation of the mediocrity that’s been driving me freakin’ nuts. One may get the impression that I hate the show, which of course leads to questioning why I’m still bothering to watch. See, I don’t hate it. I think the show has enormous potential. Good situation, good cast, good sense of time… but the storytelling is just off somehow. Fixing the show, in my opinion, will require only a couple of rather subtle adjustments, not a major overhaul, so I keep watching in hopes they’ll put it together and make my time worthwhile. So I keep watching, and bitching, and the peanut gallery laughs at me and pokes me with sharp sticks. :stuck_out_tongue:

Nope, just regular torpedoes. When they shoot 'em off, we see what looks like a conventional missile with a rocket drive of some kind, and an explosive yield on detonation whose nature has not yet been specified in detail.

Hence all the “uh oh, better get MAACO!” jokes.

My wife and I have the collection on order. It’ll arrive in early December. Do y’all have yours?

Sorry, season finale, they upgraded to photonic/photon torpedos with anti-matter variable charges. Blasted a klingon ship to pieces as it pursued them in the Expance

My, god, do they still show those commercials? I thought I would be one of the few who would think of that reference, so I kept it to myself.

Aesiron, thanks very much for the detailed answer. Much appreciated.

I’ll probably have more dumb Trek questions after tonight’s re-run.

Anyone still have copies of *Broken Bow, The Andorian Incident, A Night In Sickbay, Cogenitor, * etc… that can be passed around?

If enough of us do, then some newcomers can get caught up on character and series developements, and also see such things as Decon, Topless Hoshi, Crewman Cutler, Chef, water polo, etc…

Maybe some can post what ones they have avaible to share and those who want to see them can pay the postage, and we’ll just round robin them. I’m going to start recording them, just in case.

Aesiron already did a pretty good job of explaining the situation with the Enterprise crew searching for Trellium-D, but there’s another, older point that needs mentioning here if you’re new to the series:

The 22nd century NX-01 Enterprise does not have shields. Apparently, Star Fleet hasn’t invented shields yet. Instead, the hull plating on the outside of the ship can be “polarized” in such a way that it becomes tougher and more resistant to enemy weapons fire. It sounds similar to the structural-integrity fields mentioned in some episodes of ST:TNG, and may in fact be the basis for that later structural-integrity field technology.

Thus, instead of hearing the Captain shout “Raise the shields!” at the beginning of a battle, you hear him shout “Polarize the hull plating!”

So, do they still need to un-polarize the shields to use the transporter? Or do they just open a hatch?

They don’t use the transporter.

At least, not much.

But, if it helps, in the series premeir Broken Bow, they did beam Quantum back aboard while under fire. Suggesting that they can use transporters while polarised.

But, they really don’t like using them. I think it’s been used three or four times for humans in the entire series so far.

Right, and one of those was “Hoshi-having-a-long-ass-dream-while-being-transported” incident, which was somehow made into a full (and largely pointless) season 2 episode.

Perhaps some day they’ll do an episode where a transporter malfunction mixes Trip and T’Pol into one person – Tri’Pol. Hilarity ensues.

And now, Deep Thoughts, with Monstre…

I wonder what would happen if they reversed the polarity of the hull plating? Would enemy torpedoes hit them before even being fired?
