Sickness and phlegm

When one is sick with the flow or a sinus infection or a cold or what have you and they're constantly hawkin up loogies, via hardcore coughing fits, is it recommended to swallow the phlegm or spit it out? I would imagine that you should spit it out, because it's like the body's way of trying to get rid of the virus or bacteria. But I'm not sure. So, in the middle of a coughing episode, should one try to follow through and get the mucus up and out, or what?
